This bedtime prayer is for anyone who lies down at night with a head full of worry, replayed conversations, and a sense that the day never quite let go. Pray it in the last few minutes before sleep, when the house is quiet and the lights are low. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for a Renewed Mind

Father, I come to you at the end of this day, tired in body and crowded in thought. My mind has been running since morning, going back over what I said, what I failed to do, and what tomorrow is going to demand. Quiet it now. Take the replays, the rehearsed arguments, and the lists I keep building in the dark, and set them down in your hands. I do not have to carry them through the night.

Renew the way I think, Lord. When I am anxious, steady my heart. When I am tempted to dwell on what has gone wrong, turn my attention toward what is true, what is good, and what is still possible. Teach me to bring each thought to you instead of letting it run the show. Where I have believed lies about myself, about others, or about your faithfulness, show me the difference and let your truth take root.

Guard my sleep and guard my mind through the night. If I wake in the small hours with fear or sorrow, remind me that you do not slumber and that you are near. Let tomorrow come in its own time, with its own grace, and help me rest in knowing that you are already there. Thank you for this day, for every mercy I noticed and every one I missed. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my thoughts are loud tonight. Quiet them. Take the worries I keep turning over and hold them for me. Renew my mind as I rest, and let your truth settle deeper than my fears. Guard me while I sleep, and wake me to a morning that is new in your mercy. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul ties a renewed mind to a life no longer shaped by the habits of the world around us. As you pray, ask God to change how you think, not only what you do, and to show you where old patterns still shape your evenings.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

This passage moves from anxiety to prayer to peace. Read it slowly, naming each worry that comes to mind and handing it over to God, then ask for the peace that guards the heart and thoughts through the night.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

David speaks of lying down and sleeping in peace because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. Let this verse become a sentence you say to yourself as your head touches the pillow.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Isaiah links perfect peace with a mind fixed on the Lord. Use this verse to turn your attention away from the day’s problems and back toward God’s steady character as you drift off.

Psalm 139:23-24

23 Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

(WEB)

This prayer invites God to search the heart and lead toward what is everlasting. Ask him to show you the anxious thoughts that need his light, and to lead you in a better way.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time, ideally after you have turned off screens and before you turn out the light. Sit or lie in a familiar place, and if your hands need something to do, rest them open on your chest or hold a small object you can feel. Pray slowly, pausing after each worry you name so that you hand it over rather than rushing past it.

If you share a home, consider praying this together with a spouse, a child old enough to join, or a roommate. Speaking the words aloud to someone else can make the release feel more real. If sleep does not come, return to the shorter version and repeat the verses quietly until your thoughts begin to settle.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord quiet every restless thought and fill the mind with his peace tonight. May his truth become the ground you stand on, and may his watchful care keep you safe until morning. Rest well, knowing you are held.
