This daily prayer for a safe journey is written for the moments before you leave home, whether you are driving to work, boarding a flight, or setting out on a long trip. Pray it in the morning, in the car before you turn the key, or at the airport gate while you wait. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for a Safe Journey

Father, I come to you before I go anywhere today. You know the road ahead of me, every curve and every intersection, and you know the people I will share it with. I ask that you go before me and watch over me, the way a shepherd walks ahead of the flock to find the safe path. Keep my attention sharp and my hands steady on the wheel. Calm the part of me that rushes, and make me patient with the slow traffic and the delayed train.

I also bring you the people I love who are traveling today. Be near my children at school and my parents on the highway. Guard the pilots and drivers, the mechanics who checked the brakes, and the strangers who share the road with me, that none of us would be harmed by carelessness or bad luck. Where there is fear in me, replace it with trust that you are already there. If the journey brings unexpected changes, let me meet them with a clear mind and a willing heart. Bring me home to the people who are waiting for me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am about to leave, and I want you with me on the way. Keep me alert, guard the people in my car or on my flight, and watch over the roads and skies between here and where I am going. Quiet my worry and fill that space with your peace. Bring us all safely to our destination. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise over your coming and going. Ask God to keep your life from harm on every departure and every return, and thank him that his watch does not end when you walk out the door.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for God’s angels to be on assignment around you during your trip. Name the specific places you will pass through, such as the highway, the airport, or the parking lot, and invite his care into each one.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you feel unsure about the route, the timing, or a decision you must make while traveling, pray these words. Ask the Lord to make your path straight where you cannot see clearly, and to guide your choices as you go.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This verse answers fear directly. Read it slowly while you think about what frightens you about the trip, and let each phrase become a sentence of prayer, asking God to strengthen and hold you.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this passage to remember that you cannot travel beyond God’s presence. Thank him that he is already at your destination and that his hand will lead you there, wherever the road turns.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you start the car, board the bus, or step onto the plane, while you still have a few quiet seconds. If you are driving, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes open, and pray the words silently or under your breath. Pausing for thirty seconds at a red light or in the gate area can be enough to settle your mind before the next stretch of the journey.

It also helps to pray this with someone else. Ask a family member or friend to join you, or pray it for a relative who is traveling alone. Writing the prayer on a card and keeping it in your bag or glove box gives you something to return to when the trip feels long or stressful.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and behind you on every road and in every sky. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and bring you home rested, whole, and grateful for his care along the way.
