This is a simple prayer for an elderly parent, written for the moments when you want to bring your mother or father before God but do not know where to begin. Pray it in the morning before the day’s visits or phone calls, at the bedside, or in the car on the way over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words wherever your heart leads.

Simple Prayer for an Elderly Parent

Lord, thank you for my mother (or father), for the years of care and sacrifice that brought me to this point, and for the life she (or he) still carries. I see how the body is slowing down. Steps take longer, memories slip, and mornings can bring pain that nobody else can fully understand. Hold her (or him) close when the nights are long and the house feels too quiet.

Give my parent peace that does not depend on how the day goes. Ease the fear that comes with needing help, and the frustration of losing something once easy to do. Surround them with people who are patient and kind, and give those who care for them strength that does not run out. Where I cannot be present, be there in ways I cannot see. Guard their dignity, their faith, and their sense of being loved. Help me to honor them with my time, my words, and my hands, and forgive me where I have been impatient or have failed to notice what they needed. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you know my parent better than I do. You have known them from the beginning and you will be with them to the end. Give them rest today, a clear moment when they need it, and someone gentle beside them. Keep their heart steady and their body as comfortable as it can be. Help me to love them well in whatever this day brings. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:9

Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel your parent has been forgotten or set aside. Ask God to remember them, not in a distant way, but by sending real help and real company into their days.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God carrying his people from the beginning of life to its end. Pray it over your parent as a promise that they are held, even when they can no longer carry themselves.

Psalm 92:14

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

Use this verse to thank God for the fruitfulness of your parent’s life and for whatever faithfulness still shows in them today. Let gratitude sit alongside your concern.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Pray this when the outer body is failing and you can see it happening. Ask that their inner life would be renewed day by day, even when strength is fading.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your parent’s weariness, and your own, to Jesus in this invitation. Ask him to give them rest that reaches past the body into the places where worry lives.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as the first cup of coffee or the drive home from a visit, so the prayer becomes part of your rhythm rather than something you remember only in a crisis. If you can, hold something in your hands while you pray, like your parent’s photograph, a cup of tea, or their hand in yours. Physical touch can anchor attention when the mind wanders.

Consider inviting a sibling, a close friend, or your parent’s pastor to pray the same words with you, or to pray them on the days you cannot. Sharing the prayer across several people spreads the load and reminds you that you are not the only one carrying this.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother or father and keep them in his care. May he lift his face toward them and give them peace in every season that remains. May the one who gives this prayer to you also hold you steady as you love them well.
