This is a bedtime prayer for children’s safety, written to be prayed over a child at the end of the day or in the quiet moments before lights go out. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It works for a parent tucking in a toddler, a grandparent sitting on the edge of a bed, or a caregiver who wants to hand the night to God before going to sleep.

Night Prayer for Children’s Safety

Lord, the day is ending and the house is growing quiet. Thank You for the hours we have had with our children, for the laughter over breakfast, the scraped knees we bandaged, and the small victories we almost missed. Now we hand the night to You. Watch over every room where they are sleeping, and over the doors and windows that keep the dark outside. Guard their bodies while they rest, and guard their hearts from fear that wakes them in the middle of the night.

We ask for protection from harm we cannot see: the fever that rises quietly, the stranger who means them no good, the accident we did not expect, the danger that comes online through a screen. Surround them with Your presence so that they know they are not alone in the dark. Give them a sense of peace that settles their thoughts, and let them wake rested and unafraid. Keep us watchful and wise in our care, and when we are tired, carry what we cannot. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my child is sleeping now and I am asking You to keep them safe tonight. Stand guard over their bed, their breath, and their dreams. Protect them from what they can see and what they cannot. Quiet any fear that stirs, and let them wake in the morning strong and whole. Thank You for loving them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your child as a declaration that rest is possible even when the night feels uncertain. It reminds God, and you, that sleep is a gift that comes from being kept by Him.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This is a promise of constant watchfulness, spoken over going out and coming in. Use it to pray that God would keep your child in every movement of the night and every step of the coming day.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you pray for angelic protection around your child. Ask God to send His care into the places you cannot reach, the hallway, the bus stop, the room down the street.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for a mind that is steady and unanxious. Ask God to keep your child’s thoughts anchored on Him when worry tries to crowd in at bedtime.

Matthew 18:10

See that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks here about the care God takes for little ones. Pray that your child would know, even when you are not in the room, that their life is watched over by a Father who sees them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as after the last story or just before you turn off the light, so that the prayer becomes part of the nightly rhythm. Place a hand on your child’s back or hold their hand while you speak, since touch helps young children feel the prayer as well as hear it. For older children, you might pray together, letting them add a line of their own about what they are worried about or grateful for.

Invite others to pray this prayer too. A spouse, a grandparent, or a friend who loves your child can pray the same words from another house, which reminds everyone that the night belongs to God and that the family is not carrying the watch alone. Keep a short list of your child’s specific needs near the bed so the prayer can name real concerns each evening.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your child and keep them through the night. May He make His face shine upon them and give them peace that does not depend on circumstances. May they wake refreshed, held in the love of a faithful God who never sleeps.
