This evening prayer for daily guidance is for the end of the day, when you are tired and want to hand God the decisions, conversations and unfinished tasks you carried since morning. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after the dishes are done, or in the car before you go inside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.
Evening Prayer for Daily Guidance
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I think about the choices I made, some I am glad of and some I would make differently. I think about the words I spoke too quickly, the work I did not finish, and the people I wish I had listened to more carefully. Thank you that none of it is hidden from you. Forgive what needs forgiving, and help me set down what I was never meant to carry alone.
Show me what matters most for tomorrow. When my calendar fills with competing demands, help me see which one you are asking me to tend first. When a decision about money, work, a child, or a friend keeps me awake, give me a clear next step rather than a hundred worried replays. Guide my hands, my tongue and my attention, so that tomorrow I am led by your wisdom and not only by urgency or fear.
Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my family, my home and the people I love who are far away or going through a hard season. Let my rest be real rest, not just a pause before the next worry. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones. I trust you with the morning before I have seen it. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, this day is nearly over, and I give it back to you. Forgive me where I fell short, and thank you for what went well. Show me the next right step for tomorrow, and quiet the worries that keep me from resting. Keep my people safe tonight, and let me wake up ready to follow where you lead. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse is a good one to pray as you lie down. Speak it slowly, letting the words of safety and rest settle before you ask God for anything else. It turns the bedtime moment into a moment of trust.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when you feel unsure about tomorrow. Ask God to be the lamp that shows you the next step, not the whole road at once. It fits well with asking for daily guidance.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Use this passage when a decision is weighing on you. Name the specific choice you are facing, and ask God to direct your paths in it. Let the verse remind you that your own understanding is limited but his is not.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Pray this when the day has been hard or you feel you failed. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and let that promise carry you past tonight’s regrets into a fresh start tomorrow.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Read this verse as an invitation. Bring God the weight you are still holding from the day, one item at a time if necessary, and ask him to take the load you were never designed to carry on your own.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment in your evening, such as after the last light is turned off or while you are brushing your teeth, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than an occasional effort. If you can, sit on the edge of your bed or stand by a window with your hands open in your lap or resting on your knees. Some people find it helpful to write down one or two decisions they are carrying and pray over the paper before setting it aside.
Invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, a roommate, or a friend on the phone. Reading the prayer aloud together can make the evening feel less lonely, and it gives you a person to ask the next day how the guidance you prayed for is unfolding. If you are alone, you might pray it for a family member who is already asleep.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight also lead you through tomorrow. May his peace settle over your home, his wisdom guide each choice you face, and his faithfulness meet you again when morning comes.
