This bedtime prayer for daily wisdom is for the end of the day, when you are tired and the day’s decisions are still running through your mind. It asks God to show you what you could not see in the hours behind you and to give you a clear head for the morning ahead. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same needs.

Bedtime Prayer for Daily Wisdom

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. I think about the conversations I handled well and the ones I wish I had handled differently. I remember the choices I made quickly, the emails I answered without enough thought, and the times I said yes when I should have said no. Thank you that you saw all of it and still gave me another day. Forgive me where I acted out of pride, fear or impatience, and help me see clearly what I could not see in the middle of it.

Give me wisdom for tomorrow. I do not know what the morning will bring: the phone call I dread, the decision about money or work, the child who needs patience, the friend who needs honesty. Teach me to slow down before I speak and to listen before I judge. Show me what matters most so that I do not spend my strength on what does not. Keep my thoughts from racing tonight, and let me rest knowing that you hold the things I cannot control. Guard my sleep and protect the people I love while I am unaware. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not stop. Give me the wisdom I need for tomorrow, and show me what to set down tonight. Help me to trust you with the decisions I cannot make yet and to be honest about my own failures. Keep me and the people I love through the night, and wake me with a clear and gentle heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple request. Ask God for wisdom by name and remember that he gives it generously and without holding your past mistakes against you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the parts of tomorrow you cannot predict. Pray that you would trust God more than your own understanding and that he would guide the path ahead.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down. Thank God that rest is possible because he keeps you safe, and let your breathing slow as you pray the words.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that anxious striving does not earn sleep. Pray that God would give you rest as a gift, and ask him to loosen the grip of worry over the day’s unfinished work.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when yesterday feels heavy. Thank God that his mercies start fresh each morning, and ask him to let that newness shape how you approach tomorrow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, after you have brushed your teeth and set your phone down. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor, or kneeling beside it, helps the body settle as the words are spoken. If your mind wanders, return to one line at a time instead of trying to finish the whole prayer.

A spouse, parent, roommate or close friend can pray it with you, taking turns with the lines. Writing down one thing you want wisdom about for tomorrow on a piece of paper and leaving it beside your bed gives your hands something to hold and a clear place to return to in the morning. Couples and families with young children often find that saying the prayer together becomes a steady habit that calms everyone at once.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a quiet mind and a steady heart tonight. May he show you the next right step when morning comes, and may his peace guard your sleep until the light returns. You are known and held, and you do not have to carry tomorrow alone.
