This evening prayer is for those who go to bed carrying a broken heart, whether from a loss, a betrayal, a divorce, or a quiet grief nobody else seems to notice. Pray it at the end of the day, once the house is still, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Evening Prayer for Healing a Broken Heart

Father, the day is ending and I am tired in a way that sleep alone does not fix. My heart still aches over what I have lost, and some nights the ache feels louder than the silence of the room. I bring it to you now, the memories I keep replaying, the words I wish had been said, and the future that no longer looks the way I hoped. You see every part of this, and nothing about it is too much for you.

Lord, I release the day into your hands. Take the conversations that went wrong, the tears I held back in front of others, and the moments when I felt forgotten. Guard my mind from rehearsing old pain as I lie down. Where I have been angry, soften me, and where I have been numb, make me feel your nearness. Hold me through the night, and let me wake to a little more hope than I had yesterday. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my heart is hurting tonight and I do not have the words for all of it. Please hold what I cannot carry. Calm my thoughts, quiet the memories that keep returning, and remind me that you are close to the brokenhearted. Let me rest in your care until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, naming the specific place where your heart feels crushed. It reminds you that the nearness of God is not reserved for people who have their lives together.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring the wounds you are carrying tonight to God and ask him to bind them. Picture the care of someone tending a cut with patience, and let that picture settle your breathing.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

At the close of a hard day, this invitation is a gentle place to start. Tell Jesus you are weary and ask him to give you the rest you cannot manufacture on your own.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the night into God’s protection. Pray it as an act of trust, especially on nights when fear or sorrow makes sleep feel distant.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the source of every comfort, which means your comfort does not depend on your strength. Ask God to comfort you so that, in time, you might recognize others who are hurting too.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot near the end of your day, such as your bed with the lamp on or a chair by a window after the dishes are done. Read the prayer aloud if you can, since hearing your own voice often makes the words feel more honest. If your mind wanders, return to one line and stay there rather than trying to finish the whole page.

Keep something in your hands while you pray, like a smooth stone, a cup of warm tea, or a folded tissue. You might also invite a trusted friend or family member to pray it with you, or to pray it for you on the nights when you cannot manage it alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who binds up the brokenhearted keep you through this night and meet you again in the morning. May his peace settle over your thoughts and his faithfulness steady your heart. Rest well, for you are held.
