This evening prayer is for the moment you want to release the anger you have carried through the day, so that you can rest instead of replaying what happened. Pray it at bedtime, once the house is quiet or while you sit on the edge of the bed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Evening Prayer for Letting Go of Anger
Lord, the day is ending, and I am still holding on to something that made me angry. I keep going back over the words that were said, the way I was treated, the thing that was not fair. My chest is tight and my thoughts are loud, and I do not want to carry this into my sleep. Please take it from my hands tonight.
I confess that some of this anger has turned into resentment, and I have been rehearsing what I wish I had said. I do not know how to forgive the person who hurt me, and I am not sure I am ready. Help me to name what I feel without letting it rule me. Show me where I have been wrong too, and give me the humility to admit it.
Quiet the storm in me. Breathe your peace into the places I am most tired and most hurt. Guard my heart while I sleep, and let me wake tomorrow with a little more room for grace than I had tonight. Thank you that you hear me even when I cannot find the right words. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am angry, and I do not want to carry it to bed. Take this heat from me and cool my heart. Help me set down what I cannot fix tonight, and remind me that you are still in control. Give me rest, and make my sleep a place of peace where I can trust you with what happened today. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Ephesians 4:26-27
26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place to the devil.
(WEB)
Paul acknowledges that anger can arise, but warns against letting the sun go down on it. Pray this verse at night as a way of asking God to show you where anger has settled and to help you deal with it before you sleep.
Psalm 37:8
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing.
(WEB)
This verse names anger as something to be given up, not simply endured. Pray it slowly, asking the Lord to help you let go of the urge to retaliate and to trust that he sees what has been done to you.
Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
(WEB)
Here kindness and forgiveness are set beside the call to be tender-hearted. Pray this verse by asking God to soften the part of you that wants to keep score, and to shape your heart after his own mercy.
Psalm 4:4
Stand in awe, and don’t sin. Search your own heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.
(WEB)
The psalmist speaks of being angry yet not sinning, and of reflecting quietly on the bed. Pray this verse in the stillness of your bedroom, asking God to help you reflect honestly and then rest in him.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him for rest. Pray this verse at the end of the day, bringing your anger to him as one of the burdens you are willing to lay down.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed time in the evening, such as after you turn off the lights or right before you brush your teeth. Sit somewhere comfortable and quiet, and rest your hands open in your lap, or hold something cool like a glass of water, as a small physical reminder that you are letting go. Speak the prayer out loud if you can, because hearing your own voice often helps the thoughts slow down.
If the anger is still strong, you may need to pray the shorter version several times, or come back to the longer prayer the next night. A spouse, a close friend, or a pastor can also pray it with you or for you. Asking someone to hold you in prayer can make the burden feel lighter and less lonely.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who sees every hurt loosen the grip of anger on your heart tonight. May he give you rest that comes from trusting him, and may your sleep be deep and untroubled. Wake in the morning to his mercy, which is new again.
