This short morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up carrying something that already happened: a failure, a hurt, a word that can’t be taken back, or a regret that replays in the quiet hours. You can pray it at the start of your day, before your phone or your to-do list takes over. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God.
Short Morning Prayer for Letting Go of the Past
Good morning, Lord. Before I check my messages or think about the day, I bring you the things I have been holding from yesterday and the years before it. I keep rehearsing the conversation that went badly, the decision I wish I had made differently, and the person I was when I did not know better. My mind goes back there so easily, and I am tired of living in rooms that are already closed.
Father, I confess that I want to hold on, because holding on feels like it keeps me responsible. But I cannot change what is past, and carrying it does not change it either. So I open my hands. I place the mistake, the hurt I caused, and the hurt done to me into your care. Take what is mine to confess, forgive what needs forgiving, and show me what is mine to release today.
Give me courage for the tasks and people I will meet this morning. Let me walk into my work, my home, and my conversations as someone forgiven and not defined by my worst moment. Remind me that your mercies are new each morning, and let that newness be real for me before I finish my first cup of coffee. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, the past is pulling at me again. I give you the regret I am replaying and the memory I keep returning to. Forgive me where I need forgiving, and free me where I have been hurt. Help me take the next step in front of me this morning, and let today begin fresh in your hands. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this before you pick up your phone, while you are still sitting on the edge of your bed or standing at the kitchen sink. Keep a pen and paper nearby, and if a specific memory surfaces, write its name on the paper and place it face down on the table as a physical act of release. Then go about your morning.
If you share a home, consider praying it with your spouse or a close friend over breakfast, asking them to pray for you by name as you face the day. Having someone else speak your release aloud can make it easier to believe it and to return to it when the old thoughts come back later.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who forgives every sin and heals every wound meet you this morning with peace. May the past lose its grip on your heart, and may you walk into today light, steady, and free to love the people God has placed in front of you.
