This night prayer is for those who go to bed still thinking about people they love, people who frustrated them, or people they wish they had been more patient with. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s conversations have ended. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak the words that come to mind in your own voice.

Night Prayer for Loving Others

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day with my hands open. Some of the people I love were close to me today, and some were far away and still on my mind. I thank you for each of them. I think about the sharp word I spoke too quickly, the request I brushed aside, and the times I was more concerned with being right than with being kind. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me see those moments clearly so I can make them right tomorrow.

Father, I bring you the people who are carrying heavy things tonight: the friend waiting on test results, the child who struggled at school, the parent who is tired and alone, the coworker who seemed distant. Hold each of them in your care. Give them rest that reaches deeper than sleep. Where I can help, show me how, and where I cannot, let your love reach them through someone else. Teach me to love without keeping score, and to give without needing to be thanked. Keep my heart soft through the night, and wake me tomorrow ready to love again. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you have loved me well today, even when I did not love others as I should. Thank you for the people in my life. Forgive my impatience and my pride. Hold the ones I care about in your hands tonight, especially those who are hurting. Help me love them tomorrow the way you have loved me. Give me peace as I lie down, and let me wake with a willing heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each quality become a question: am I patient, am I kind, am I keeping track of wrongs? Pray it over the people you are thinking of tonight, asking God to shape your love into this pattern.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

(WEB)

Jesus gave this as a command, not a suggestion. As you rest, ask him to remind you of the way he has loved you, and to let that memory become the measure for how you treat others tomorrow.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of lying down and sleeping in safety. Pray it for the people who will not sleep well tonight, asking that God would keep them safe and give them the calm you are reaching for now.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Bearing with one another and forgiving are often hardest at the end of a long day. Use this verse to name any hurt you are still holding, and ask God to help you release it before you close your eyes.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Every morning brings fresh mercy, which means your failures from today do not have the final word. Pray this verse as you go to sleep, trusting that God’s faithfulness will meet you again when you wake and that you can start again in love.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment, such as after you brush your teeth or once the house is quiet, so the prayer becomes part of your nightly rhythm. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window where you can see the dark outside. Some people find it helps to hold a small object, like a phone set face down or a cup of water, as a reminder to set the day down.

If you share a home, a partner or child could pray the second paragraph with you, taking turns naming people. Families and close friends can also pray for one another’s relationships at the same time, even from different houses. Keep a short list on paper beside the bed of names you want to remember, and read through it slowly before you pray.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows every name hold you as you rest tonight. May the people you love be kept in peace, and may the ones who weigh on your heart find comfort they did not expect. May God fill you with patient, generous love and let you wake refreshed to love well again.
