This short morning prayer is for parents and caregivers who want to ask God for their children before the day gets going. Pray it first thing, while the house is still quiet, or in the car before school drop-off or on the stairs on the way to wake a sleepy child. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries that are on your heart this particular morning.

Short Morning Prayer for My Children

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the children you have given me to love and look after. Before anyone is awake, I bring them to you. Go ahead of them today into the classroom, the playground, the team practice, the bus ride and the hallway between classes. Where they feel small, make them brave. Where they feel left out, remind them they are seen. Where they are tempted to be unkind or to give up, give them a steady heart and a clear conscience.

Guard their minds from fear and their bodies from harm. Give them wisdom for the choices they will face, especially the ones I will not be there to see. Help them to speak kindly to their friends, to tell the truth when it costs them something, and to ask for help when they need it. Let them know, even on hard days, that they belong to you and that you have not forgotten them. Be the Father they can always come back to. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, keep my children safe today. Go with them to school and to every place they will be. Give them kind hearts, honest words and courage for whatever they face. Remind them that you love them more than I ever could, and let that be the first thing they remember when they wake and the last thing they hold at night. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that is yours alone before the house wakes up, such as with a cup of tea at the kitchen table or while the coffee brews. Keep a pencil nearby and jot down any names or events from yesterday that you want to bring to God. Many parents find it helpful to hold something in their hands, like a child’s school bag or a worn family photo, so that the prayer has a physical anchor.

If you have a partner, a grandparent or a friend who loves your children, invite them to pray the same words, or to add a sentence of their own. You might even text the prayer to them before school begins. Praying together across the miles reminds everyone that your children are carried by more than one set of hands.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before these children today and walk beside them every step. May he give them courage when they are afraid, kindness when they are tempted to be unkind, and joy in the small things. May they rest tonight knowing they are loved by a God who never sleeps.
