This is a Christian prayer for our family, written for households who want to bring their shared life before God together. Pray it at the kitchen table before a meal, during a family devotion, or in the car on the way to school or work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the places it leaves open.
Christian Prayer for Our Family
Father, thank You for the people You have placed in our home. Thank You for the everyday mercies we tend to overlook: the noise in the hallway, the shared dishes, the ordinary conversations that somehow hold us together. We do not take these gifts for granted, and we ask You to make us thankful for each one.
Lord, we bring You the worries we carry for one another. Give wisdom to the parents who are making decisions about school, work and money. Steady the children who feel anxious about friends, grades or the future. Comfort anyone in our family who is sick, grieving or far from home. Guard our marriages, our friendships and our hearts from bitterness, and help us forgive quickly when we fail each other. Teach us to speak gently and to listen longer than we talk.
Make our home a place where Your presence is felt, where prayer is normal and Scripture is familiar, and where love is shown in small, faithful acts. Hold each of us close, and let our family be a light to the people around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, our family is in Your hands. Be with each person here today. Give us patience with one another, wisdom for the decisions ahead, and peace where there is tension. Keep us close to You and close to each other. Thank You for loving us more than we can understand. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Joshua 24:15
If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
(WEB)
Joshua made this declaration before the whole nation, and it can become a household vow. Pray it over your family by naming together the commitment to serve the Lord in your home, even on ordinary days when it feels quiet.
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
This verse reminds a family that their work and plans cannot succeed without God’s help. Use it when you feel stretched thin, and ask the Lord to build the household you cannot build by effort alone.
Ephesians 6:4
You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
(WEB)
Paul speaks here to fathers, but the spirit of the verse applies to every parent. Pray that you would raise your children with patience and discipline that reflects the Lord’s own care for them.
Colossians 3:13
Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
(WEB)
Family life brings friction, and this verse points toward forgiveness as a daily practice. Pray it when someone has hurt you, asking God to help you bear with one another and let go of grievances.
Romans 12:12
Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer…
(WEB)
This verse names three habits that sustain a family through hard seasons: hope, patience and steady prayer. Ask God to make these qualities grow in each person in your home.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time when everyone can be present, such as breakfast, dinner or bedtime. Hold hands or place a hand on the shoulder of the person beside you, and let each person add a sentence of thanks or a specific request after you read. Keeping the prayer short and repeated will help it become part of your family’s rhythm.
If someone in the family cannot be there, pray it for them by name, or invite them to read a line over the phone or in a note. Grandparents, friends or a pastor can also be invited to join, and their prayers can be added to yours. What matters most is that the family is lifted before God together, not that the words are perfect.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless each person in this family and keep them. May He make His face shine upon them and give them peace in the days ahead. May the love shown in this home reach beyond its walls, and may every member grow closer to Christ and to one another.
