This bedtime prayer is for the moment when doubt follows you into the night, when questions about God, about your future, or about whether you are really loved keep you awake. Pray it at the end of the day, lying down or sitting on the edge of your bed, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Overcoming Doubt

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the questions I could not settle while the sun was up. I doubt what I cannot see. I wonder whether you hear me, whether my prayers reach past the ceiling, and whether the things I have hoped for will ever come. Some of these thoughts are loud at night, and I am tired of arguing with them alone.

So I set them down here, one at a time. I release the need to have every answer before I sleep. You know the things I am afraid to say out loud, and you are not shaken by them. Quiet the voice that says I am forgotten, and steady the part of me that wants proof before I trust. Give me enough light to take the next step tomorrow, and no more than that tonight.

Keep watch over me while I rest. Guard my mind from the spiral of what-ifs, and remind me of the times you have been faithful before. I choose to trust you with what I do not understand. Let my last thought be of your nearness, and let me wake knowing that you did not leave me in the dark. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am doubting again tonight, and I am tired. Hold me in your hands while I rest. Calm the questions, and give me enough faith to close my eyes. I trust you with what I cannot see, and I give you this night and tomorrow’s questions too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When doubt is loud at night, this verse invites you to stop striving and simply know that God is God. Pray it slowly, letting each phrase slow your breathing and quiet the urge to solve everything before morning.

Mark 9:24

Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”

(WEB)

A father cries out honestly in this verse, admitting belief and unbelief in the same breath. Pray it as permission to bring your mixed heart to God without pretending you have it all together.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

This passage describes a God who is present everywhere, even in the darkest places. Pray it when you feel far away, reminding yourself that no distance you feel is a distance God has created.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to fear here, promising strength and help. Pray it as you lie in bed, naming the specific fear that keeps returning and handing it over to the One who says he is with you.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that might separate us from God and then answers that nothing can. Pray this at the close of the day to rest in the security of God’s love, especially when doubt tells you that you are on your own.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as after you turn off the lights or just before you plug in your phone for the night. Keep a small notebook on your nightstand so you can write down the doubts that surface, then read them back to God as part of the prayer. Writing gives the racing thoughts somewhere to rest.

If you share a home with someone who prays, ask them to pray this with you, or ask a spouse, friend, or parent to pray it over you on a hard night. Hearing another voice speak your doubts to God can loosen their grip, and it reminds you that you are not carrying them alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who holds the stars also hold your tired heart tonight. May the questions that trouble you find their answer in his steady love, and may you wake with courage to take the next small step. Sleep well, knowing you are kept by a faithful God.
