These prayers are for the days when hope feels thin and the future looks uncertain. You can pray the longer prayer below in a quiet moment, such as early morning or at night before sleep, or read it aloud as written. You can also use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Prayers for Staying Hopeful

Father, you know how tired I am. Some mornings I wake up already bracing for bad news, and my mind runs ahead to everything that could go wrong. The situation I am carrying has not resolved the way I hoped, and I am not sure how much longer I can keep believing that things will change. Please meet me in the gap between what I see and what I long for. Quiet the fear that tells me to give up on tomorrow.

Help me remember that hope is not the same as certainty about outcomes. Hope is trust in you, the one who has been faithful before and who is faithful now. When I cannot see the way forward, let me take the next small step instead of demanding the whole map. Give me patience with myself on the hard days, and grace when I doubt. Remind me of the good you have already done in my life, even when the present feels heavy.

I also bring you the people I love who are struggling too. Surround them with your presence and let them feel that they are not alone. Keep my heart soft toward you and open to the ways you are working, even when those ways are slow and hidden. I trust that you are not finished with my story. Strengthen what is weak in me and steady what is shaking. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel my hope slipping today. Be near me right now and steady my heart. Remind me that you are faithful, that you see what I am going through, and that you are not done working. Help me take one honest step forward and trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 15:13

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to fill you with joy and peace as you trust him, and to let hope grow in you through the power of his Spirit. It is a good verse to repeat slowly when your confidence feels small.

Psalm 42:11

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

(WEB)

Use this psalm to speak honestly to your own soul, the way the psalmist does, and then turn back toward God as your help. Naming your discouragement and choosing to hope in God at the same time can ease the weight you carry.

Lamentations 3:21-23

21 This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. 22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words by thanking God for his steady mercy, which begins again each morning. This passage is especially useful at dawn, when the day ahead feels heavy and you need to be reminded that his faithfulness is new every day.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Ask the Lord to renew your strength where you feel depleted, and to help you wait on him with patience instead of striving on your own. Pray this verse especially when you feel too worn out to keep going.

Psalm 27:13-14

13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

Pray this passage by confessing your belief that you will see God’s goodness, even if not yet and not in the way you expected. Then ask him to give you courage to wait for him and not lose heart while you do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be alone and unhurried, perhaps the first few minutes after you wake or the quiet before you sleep. Sit with a cup of tea or rest your hands open on your lap, which can help you release the tension you are holding. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let the words settle before moving on.

If hope feels especially difficult, pray the shorter version again during the day, perhaps at a red light, while washing dishes, or in a break at work. You might also invite a trusted friend or family member to pray the longer prayer with you, or to pray for you when you cannot find the words yourself.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, and may your heart overflow with a steady expectation that he is at work. Whatever you are facing today, may you be held by his faithfulness and strengthened to take the next faithful step.
