This bedtime prayer for the journey ahead is for the end of the day, when your mind is still running through tomorrow’s roads, deadlines and decisions. Pray it in the quiet hour before sleep, when the house is settling and there is nothing left to do but hand the next day to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in its shape.

Bedtime Prayer for the Journey Ahead

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day. Thank you for the hours I have been given, for the work that got done, for the people who made me laugh, and for the quiet moments I almost missed. Forgive me for the things I said too quickly, the tasks I left unfinished, and the worries I carried when I should have brought them to you. I set them down now, one by one, and I ask you to take them.

Tomorrow feels heavy already. I think about the drive, the appointments, the conversations I am dreading, and the decisions I have not yet made. I ask for wisdom for the choices ahead and for steady hands to carry the responsibilities I cannot avoid. Go before me into every road and every room. Where I am afraid, give me courage; where I am tired, give me strength; where I am certain I cannot manage, remind me that you already see the way.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my home, my body and my mind, and keep away the fear that tries to wake me in the dark. Let my rest be real rest. When I open my eyes in the morning, let me remember that your mercies are new, and let me go into the journey ahead trusting that you walk it with me. Thank you that I do not face tomorrow alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and I am ready to rest. Take the day I am leaving behind and the day I am about to enter. Guard the road I will travel, the people I love, and the work waiting for me. Quiet my thoughts and let me sleep in your care. Give me enough wisdom and strength for tomorrow, and remind me that you are already there. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the road you will take tomorrow, asking God to watch over your going out and your coming in. It is a reminder that his protection is not limited to one place or one hour.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down, letting the words become your own. Ask God to give you the kind of peace that allows you to sleep without first solving everything.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Bring your anxious planning to God through this verse, confessing that you cannot control every outcome. Ask him to give you rest in the midst of your responsibilities.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this promise to pray for courage over the things you fear in the coming day. Name those fears specifically, then ask God to be the one who strengthens and holds you.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as you prepare for morning, thanking God that his mercies do not run out with yesterday. It helps you face the unknown with gratitude rather than dread.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after you have turned off the screens and before you climb into bed, ideally in the same spot each night so your body begins to associate that place with rest. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window with the lights low. If it helps, write tomorrow’s worries on a card and place it beside you, then hold it in your hands while you pray and set it down when you say Amen.

You can also pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate or a child who is nervous about school. Take turns speaking the lines, or let one person read the prayer while the other adds a sentence about a specific need. Praying together at night can turn a stressful evening into a shared moment of trust in God’s care.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your going out and coming in give you deep and gentle rest tonight. May he guard the road you will travel tomorrow and meet you in every decision with wisdom. May you wake knowing that his mercies are new and that you are held.
