This short prayer is for anyone who spends their days caring for, teaching, feeding, driving, listening to or lifting up other people, often with little thanks and less rest. Pray it at the start of a shift, before a visit, in the car before walking into a classroom, or at the end of a long day when you have nothing left to say. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Those Serving Others

Lord, you see the people I serve and you see me serving them. You know the calls I will answer today, the needs that will land on my desk or my kitchen counter or my heart before I’ve had my coffee, and the ones I’ll only half understand. I bring you my energy, which is already running low, and my patience, which will be tested before lunch. Give me the strength to keep going when the work feels repetitive and the thanks feels absent. Help me to remember that the person in front of me is someone you love, not a task to be finished.

Where I have been quick-tempered, hurried, or proud about what I have done, forgive me, and teach me to rest in your grace instead of my own performance. Guard my heart from the bitterness that creeps in when I feel unseen. Fill me with the kind of love that does not depend on how I am treated in return. Let my hands be useful, my words be honest, and my presence be steady, so that the people I serve can see something of your care through me. Thank you for the privilege of being part of the good you are doing in this world. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am about to go back in. Be near to me in this moment. Give me patience for the next person who needs something from me, wisdom for the decision in front of me, and kindness that outlasts my frustration. Remind me that I am serving you in serving them, and that you are already at work in what I cannot see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel like quitting. Ask God to keep you from growing weary in the ordinary good you do each day, and to trust that a harvest is coming in his time, even if you cannot see it yet.

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Pray this when your work feels small or unnoticed. Thank Jesus for living a life of service himself, and ask him to shape your motives so that your service reflects his humility rather than your need to be admired.

Colossians 3:23-24

23 And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this at the start of your day. Ask God to help you work with wholehearted effort, knowing that your ultimate audience is the Lord, not the people who notice or fail to notice what you do.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel depleted. Lift your eyes from the demands around you to the one who made heaven and earth, and ask him to be the source of help you cannot manufacture on your own.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this when your strength is gone. Ask God to give power to your weariness and to renew what you have spent, trusting that his help is available even when your own reserves have run dry.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment that already exists in your routine, such as the drive into work, the pause before you unlock the door, or the few minutes after the last visitor leaves. Keep a copy of the prayer in your phone or tucked into your bag, and if your hands are busy, pray silently while you fold laundry, wash dishes or walk between rooms. Speaking the words slowly, even under your breath, helps the prayer settle into your body and not just your mind.

If you serve alongside others, consider praying this prayer together before a shift begins, or ask a friend, spouse or fellow volunteer to pray it over you on a hard day. Being prayed for by someone who knows your work can remind you that you are not carrying it alone. You might also write the verses on a card and place it where you will see it, so that God’s words are close at hand when your own words run thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every act of kindness you have offered strengthen your hands and steady your heart. May he meet you in the tired places and give you rest that is deeper than sleep. May the people you serve be blessed through you, and may you be blessed in return with the quiet knowledge that your labor is not in vain.
