This bedtime prayer for wisdom is written for the end of the day, when your mind is still sorting through conversations, decisions and loose ends. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the particular choices you faced today. It works as well for a parent lying awake over a hard call as for a student who wants clarity before an exam.

Bedtime Prayer for Wisdom

Lord, the day is ending and I am bringing it to you. I replayed some of what I said and did, and some of it I wish I had handled differently. Thank you that your mercy meets me in those places. Forgive me where I was impatient, quick to speak, or slow to listen. Teach me what I could not see while I was in the middle of it.

Give me wisdom for tomorrow, the kind that knows what to say and what to leave unsaid. Help me weigh the decisions waiting for me, the money, the work, the people who depend on me, without rushing ahead of you. When I cannot see the right path, remind me that you do not withhold good things from those who ask. Let my thoughts settle now, so that I am not carrying questions into my sleep that you already hold.

Guard my rest tonight. Keep worry from setting up camp in my mind, and give me peace enough to close my eyes. I trust that you are awake while I sleep, and that you will go on shaping my judgment while I am unaware. Make me ready to listen when morning comes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is still busy. Give me wisdom for what waits tomorrow, and show me what to do with the things I could not finish today. Quiet my thoughts, guard my sleep, and let me wake up trusting you with the next step. Thank you for today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific decision that is keeping you up. Ask God for wisdom in that exact matter, trusting his promise to give generously without holding back.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your own sense of what should happen. Ask God to make your paths straight, and let your tired heart rest in his direction instead of your own understanding.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you lie down. Thank God that rest is possible because he keeps watch, and ask him to help you lay down the day’s worries alongside your body.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as an honest confession of striving. Ask God to show you where you have been working from anxiety, and to give you the sleep he gives to those he loves.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Use this verse to thank God that wisdom comes from him rather than from your own cleverness. Ask him to speak into your thinking before you fall asleep, and to keep you open to what he shows you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying down with your hands open on the blanket. If you tend to go over the day in your head, you might write down two or three open questions on a notepad beside you first, then pray over each one by name. Seeing them on paper often lets the mind stop circling.

If you share a home with a spouse, a child or a roommate, you can pray the prayer together, taking turns with the paragraphs. Parents can also pray it over a child at bedtime, changing the first person to “she” or “he” where it fits. Praying it with someone else can turn a lonely worry into a shared trust in God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you wisdom for tomorrow and rest for tonight. May he hold the questions you could not answer and keep your heart steady in his care. May you wake refreshed, ready to listen, and confident that the God who watched over your day is still watching over you.
