This list gives you Bible verses about being a good friend, organized by the moments when friendship is hardest to live out: when a friend is hurting, when you have to tell the truth, and when you are the one who needs to be forgiven. It is written for anyone who wants Scripture to shape how they show up for the people they love. Taken together, these verses show that friendship in God’s eyes is steady, honest, willing to bear weight, and rooted in love that costs something.

Verses for Showing Up When a Friend Is Hurting

Some of the most important things a friend does happen without words. These verses speak to the quiet work of staying close when someone you care about is struggling, grieving or simply worn down.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Solomon observes that two people working together get more done and are better off than one alone. Think of one friend who is carrying something heavy right now, and send a text today offering a specific task, like picking up groceries or driving to an appointment.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to take on each other’s emotions, celebrating with those who celebrate and mourning with those who mourn. Before you offer advice, sit with your friend’s feelings for a few minutes. Let them finish talking before you respond.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to carry one another’s burdens, and says this fulfills the law of Christ. Look for one burden a friend has mentioned and quietly take a piece of it off their plate this week, without making a show of it.

Verses for Telling the Truth in Love

A good friend does not only comfort. Sometimes love means saying what is hard to hear. These verses help you speak honestly without losing warmth, and receive correction without getting defensive.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

The proverb compares friends to iron sharpening iron, a picture of honest friction that makes both people better. Ask yourself whether there is a friendship where you have been avoiding a needed conversation, and pray about the right words before you speak.

Proverbs 27:6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

(WEB)

The wise writer says the wounds of a friend are faithful, while an enemy’s kisses are deceptive. Notice the difference between flattery that keeps you comfortable and honesty that serves your friend, and choose the second even when it costs you a little ease.

Ephesians 4:15

But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ…

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to speak the truth in love so they grow up in every way. Before you correct a friend, check whether your words are aimed at their good or at your own frustration, and soften your tone where you can.

Verses for Loyalty and Faithful Love

Friendship endures when it is anchored in faithfulness. These verses speak to staying loyal through seasons of distance, disagreement and inconvenience, and to the kind of love that does not quit.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

This verse says a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Make a list of two or three friends whose loyalty has been proven in hard times, and let one of them know this week what their steadiness has meant to you.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

(WEB)

The proverb notes that a man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Rather than measuring friendship by how many people you know, invest deeply in the few who stay near you through difficulty.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Paul describes love as patient and kind, not envious or boastful, and as bearing and enduring all things. Read this passage slowly and pick the one quality you find hardest to practice with a particular friend, then ask God to grow it in you.

Verses for Forgiveness and Restoring a Friendship

Every friendship meets offense sooner or later. These verses show how to forgive, how to ask for forgiveness, and how to repair what has been broken.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul tells believers to bear with one another and forgive each other as the Lord forgave them. If there is a grievance you keep replaying, name it honestly in prayer and decide, out loud, to release it to God.

Matthew 18:15

“If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that when a brother sins against you, you should go and show him his fault in private. Choose a private, calm moment to talk instead of posting, complaining to others, or waiting for the offense to fade on its own.

Luke 17:3-4

3 Be careful. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. 4 If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times returns, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

(WEB)

Jesus instructs his disciples to rebuke a brother who sins and forgive him when he repents, even if the offense happens many times. If someone has apologized to you, take a step toward them today rather than holding the apology at arm’s length.

How to Use These Verses

Start by choosing one or two verses that match a friendship you are currently living in, rather than trying to memorize the whole list at once. Write them on a card and keep it in your wallet, on your phone’s lock screen, or on the mirror where you get ready in the morning. A verse you see often will do more for you than a long list you read once.

Pray the verse back to God before you talk with a friend. For example, if you are preparing a hard conversation, read Ephesians 4:15 aloud, then ask God to help you speak truthfully and gently. After the conversation, pray the verse again and thank God for any grace you saw in yourself or in your friend.

A Short Prayer for Being a Friend

Lord, thank you for the friends you have given me and for the ways you have shown me faithful love through them. Teach me to show up when people are hurting, to speak the truth with kindness, and to stay loyal when things are hard or inconvenient. Where I have been careless, forgive me, and help me make things right with the people I have wounded. Give me a generous heart and a patient spirit, so that the people around me can see something of your faithfulness in how I love them. Amen.
