This list gives you Bible verses about being a good friend, with a short explanation of what each one asks of you in ordinary friendship. It is written for anyone who wants to be a steadier, kinder, more honest friend and does not know where in Scripture to start. Taken together, these verses describe a friend who stays close in hard seasons, speaks the truth with care, and treats others as family rather than as a convenience.

Verses on Loyalty in Hard Seasons

Loyalty is tested less in good times than when a friend is struggling, embarrassed, or far from their best. The verses in this group show what it looks like to stay present when staying is costly.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

(WEB)

This verse says a true friend loves at all times, and that family-like loyalty shows itself most in trouble. Try this week to reach out to a friend who is going through something hard, even if it is only a text saying you are thinking of them.

Ruth 1:16-17

16 Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”

(WEB)

Ruth refuses to leave Naomi when leaving would have been easier and perhaps expected. Notice one small way you can show that kind of commitment: keep a standing time each week for a friend, and protect it when other plans compete for it.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

The writer observes that two people do better together, because one can lift up the other when they fall. Pay attention today to a friend who seems to be falling behind, and ask how you might help carry part of the load.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Jesus describes the greatest love as laying down one’s life for friends, which he then shows in his own death. For most of us the sacrifice is smaller, such as giving time, money, or a difficult conversation, and that is still a way of laying something down for someone else.

Verses on Honesty and Speaking Truth in Love

A good friend does not only comfort. They also tell the truth, gently and with the friend’s good in mind. These verses describe how to hold honesty and kindness together.

Proverbs 27:6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

(WEB)

This proverb contrasts the honest wounds of a friend with the flattering kisses of an enemy. Before your next hard conversation, ask yourself whether you are speaking to help or to win, and let that answer shape your words.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

(WEB)

Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another through honest exchange. Think of one friend whose perspective has improved your thinking, and thank them specifically for it this week.

Ephesians 4:15

But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ…

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to speak the truth in love, so that honesty never becomes a weapon and love never requires dishonesty. When you need to raise a concern, begin by naming what you value in the person before naming the problem.

Proverbs 18:24

A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

(WEB)

The proverb notes that a person with many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. The point is quality over a crowd, so consider whether your time is going into the few relationships that truly sustain you.

Verses on Kindness, Encouragement and Showing Up

Friendship is built in small daily acts: a kind word, a shared meal, a willingness to listen. These verses encourage those ordinary faithful habits.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to be devoted to one another in love and to honor each other above themselves. Try giving a friend a real compliment this week, one specific enough that they know you noticed.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

This verse calls for encouraging and building each other up, as people already doing so. Choose one friend and tell them plainly what you appreciate about how they have helped you.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul lists compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, and asks us to bear with one another and forgive. When a friend disappoints you, pause before reacting and ask what you would want from them if you were the one who had fallen short.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul asks us not to act from selfish ambition but to look also to the interests of others. Practically, this might mean asking a friend what would help them this week instead of assuming.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

(WEB)

Bearing one another’s burdens is named as a way of fulfilling the law of Christ. Look for one practical burden you could lift this week, such as a meal, a ride, or an errand, and offer it simply without making a speech about it.

How to Use These Verses

Choose three or four verses that speak to the friendships you are most concerned about right now, and write them on a card or note on your phone. Place the card where you will see it before you open messages or head into a conversation with someone you care about. Reading them slowly once a day will help them move from knowledge into habit.

Pray through a verse for a specific friend rather than only for yourself. Ask God to show you where loyalty, honesty or kindness is needed in that relationship, and then take one small step the same day. Returning to these passages in quiet moments, especially after a friendship has been strained, can help you respond with humility rather than defensiveness.

A Short Prayer for Being a Good Friend

Lord, thank you for the friends you have given me and for the ways you have stayed close to me when I was struggling. Help me to be loyal in hard seasons, honest without being harsh, and kind in small, everyday ways. Show me which friend needs a call, a meal or a listening ear this week, and give me the courage to act on what you show me. Where I have failed a friend, forgive me, and help me make things right with humility. Let my friendships reflect your faithfulness to me. Amen.
