This list gives you Bible passages about finding courage, arranged by the moments when fear tends to show up: early in the morning, in a hard conversation, and in the long stretches of waiting. It is for anyone who needs steadiness, not someone who has already figured everything out. The passages share one thread: courage in Scripture is rarely the absence of fear. It is trust in a God who stays present while the fear is still there.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Day

Many people feel their courage drain away before the day has even started. The first entries address that early-morning dread, when the list of things to face feels longer than your energy. These verses point you to the source of strength rather than asking you to manufacture it yourself.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gives this command to Joshua just before he leads Israel into unfamiliar territory. Before you leave the house, say the reason for the courage out loud, not just the command. Then choose one small task for the morning and face it first.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names the Lord as his light and his stronghold, which means fear loses its authority when God is the one you answer to. Take a moment before checking your phone to name who you are facing the day with. Let that name be the first thing you think about.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This verse speaks God’s presence and help directly into fear. When you feel the urge to scan ahead for every possible problem, pause and remember that God has already said he will be with you. Then return to the task in front of you.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words to the whole nation as they prepare to enter a land they have never seen. Notice that the promise is that God will not leave you, which is different from promising that the road will be easy. Write this one on a card and keep it in your bag for the day.

Verses for Hard Conversations and Difficult Choices

Courage is often tested in conversations you dread and decisions you cannot reverse. These passages speak to moments when speaking up or stepping forward costs you something. They do not promise the outcome you want, but they do address the fear that keeps you silent.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul writes to Timothy, a younger leader who was tempted to shrink back, and reminds him that the Spirit given to believers is not timid. Before a hard talk, name the specific fear you feel and ask God for the spirit of power and self-control. Then say the first sentence you have been avoiding.

Joshua 1:7

Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

(WEB)

This verse ties courage to faithfulness to what God has already revealed. Courage here is not a feeling but a commitment to act on known truth. Ask yourself what you already know to be right in your situation, and let that be the guide for your next step.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David admits he is afraid, and he chooses to trust anyway. This is one of the most honest verses about courage in the Psalms. When fear rises during a difficult decision, say this sentence out loud, even if your trust feels small.

Matthew 14:27

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to frightened disciples in a storm on the lake. His presence is the answer to their fear, not a change in the weather. When a situation feels overwhelming, picture him near you and let his words interrupt your panic.

Verses for Waiting, Uncertainty and Long Seasons

Some of the hardest courage is the kind that keeps going when nothing seems to change. Waiting for test results, a reply, or an answer to prayer can wear down your nerve. These verses speak to endurance and quiet trust in the middle of the unknown.

Psalm 31:24

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.

(WEB)

David urges his readers to be strong and let their hearts take courage, and he grounds that call in hope in the Lord. Waiting well means refusing to let discouragement set the pace. Each evening, name one thing you hoped in God for that day, however small.

Romans 8:31

What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

(WEB)

Paul asks a bold question about who can stand against believers when God is for them. This verse does not deny real opposition but reframes it under God’s care. When you feel outnumbered by worries, repeat this question slowly and let it set the size of your fears.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

The psalmist describes an upheaval so extreme that the earth itself seems to move, yet he says God is a refuge and strength. This passage is for seasons when the ground under you feels unstable. Read it slowly during a long wait and notice what stays fixed.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes renewed strength for those who wait on the Lord, using images of eagles and running without weariness. Courage in a long season is often less like a sprint and more like steady endurance. Choose one simple, ordinary task each day and do it faithfully as an act of trust.

Verses for Standing Firm When Others Disagree

Courage sometimes means standing for what is right when it is unpopular or misunderstood. These passages address the pressure to conform and the need to hold onto convictions with humility and resolve.

1 Corinthians 16:13

Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!

(WEB)

Paul gives a short set of commands to the Corinthian church, and this one calls for watchfulness and steadfastness. Standing firm is an active posture, not a passive one. Ask yourself where you have been drifting, and make one concrete correction this week.

Acts 4:29

Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness…

(WEB)

After being threatened by religious leaders, the believers pray for boldness to keep speaking the word. Notice that they ask for courage rather than for the threat to disappear. When you face opposition, bring your request to God in the same direct way and then speak with the boldness you have been given.

Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might, not in their own resources. This shifts courage from self-reliance to dependence. Before a moment of pressure, pray for the strength you do not have and trust that it is available.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three of these passages that match the fear you feel most often, and write them on a note card or in the notes app on your phone. Read them when you wake up, before a meeting, or at the moment the anxiety starts to climb. Repetition helps the words move from memory into habit.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn a line like Psalm 27:1 into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you are my light; help me see the next step.” Praying Scripture in your own words keeps it personal and gives you a place to bring the fear that the verse names.

A Short Prayer for Finding Courage

Lord, you know the fears I carry today, including the ones I have not put into words. I confess that I often try to face them with my own strength, and I grow tired quickly. Remind me that you are with me in every hard moment, just as you promised. Give me the courage to take the next faithful step, and help me rest in your presence when the outcome is still unknown. Strengthen my heart to trust you, one ordinary hour at a time. Amen.
