This page gives you Bible verses about finding courage, with a plain explanation of what each one says and how to carry it into a real day. It is for anyone facing a conversation they dread, a decision they cannot undo, or a fear that keeps returning. These verses share one thread: courage in Scripture rarely means the absence of fear. It means facing what frightens you because the Lord has promised to be present in it.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Conversation

Some courage is needed before anything happens at all. These verses speak to the dread that builds in the hours before a difficult talk, a diagnosis appointment, or a meeting you have been rehearsing in your head since the night before.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua received this command as he stood at the edge of a land he had never entered. Before you walk into the room, say the words “the Lord your God is with you” out loud in the car or at the sink. Let the promise come before the performance.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

David names three things he is not afraid of, and he begins with light and salvation rather than with his enemies. Before the hard talk, name the one thing that is most true about God, and let that fact sit beside the fear instead of waiting until the fear is gone.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to a frightened people here with three promises in a row: presence, strength, and help. Pick one of the three that you need most this morning and repeat it on your way out the door.

Verses for Facing a Fear That Keeps Returning

Courage is not a single decision. Many people fight the same fear for years, and these verses speak to that long, repeated struggle, the anxiety that wakes you at three in the morning or the old worry that resurfaces every spring.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel near the end of his life, and he was speaking about a people who had many reasons to be afraid. When a fear comes back, remind yourself that the promise does not depend on your feelings being steady. Write “He will not leave me” on a card and keep it in your wallet.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Paul wrote to a young pastor who seemed to be shrinking back from his work. The spirit Paul describes is marked by power, love, and self-control, and it is given, not manufactured. When timidity returns, ask God for the specific quality you lack and wait for it.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a moment of real danger, yet his response was to trust rather than to pretend he felt nothing. Name the fear plainly in prayer, then name the trust in the same breath. Honest fear offered to God is part of courage, not its opposite.

Verses for Standing Up for What Is Right

Sometimes courage means speaking when silence would be easier, or refusing to go along with something you know is wrong. These verses come from people who were tempted to stay quiet and were called to act.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Joshua challenged a whole nation to choose whom they would serve, and he made his own choice public. Courage often starts with a clear, personal decision that others can see. Decide today what you will not compromise on, and say it to one trusted person.

Daniel 3:17-18

17 If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”

(WEB)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego spoke before the king with the fire already prepared. Their confidence rested on God’s ability to rescue them, yet they added that they would stand firm even if he did not. Pray for the same kind of settled loyalty, one that does not depend on the outcome.

Acts 4:19-20

19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves, 20 for we can’t help telling the things which we saw and heard.”

(WEB)

Peter and John answered religious leaders who had ordered them to stop speaking about Jesus. They were not reckless, but they were clear about where their obedience lay. When you face pressure to stay quiet about your faith or your convictions, prepare one honest sentence in advance.

Verses for Taking the Next Step Forward

The last group of verses speaks to courage in motion, the moment when you have prayed and thought and now must act. These passages encourage you to move, trusting that God goes ahead of you.

Psalm 118:6

The LORD is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

(WEB)

The psalmist sings that the Lord is on his side, and therefore fear has little to say about what he can do. Keep this verse in mind when you feel tempted to wait for certainty before you begin. Certainty usually arrives after the first step.

Matthew 14:27

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to frightened disciples in a boat during a storm, and his presence is what calms them. Before you act, let the words “Take courage” be the last thing you hear in your mind. Then take the step you have been putting off.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul writes this from prison, and the strength he describes is not a promise of unlimited success but of sufficiency for whatever God asks. When a task feels bigger than you, name the one thing you are being asked to do today rather than the whole future. Ask for strength for that one thing.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on index cards and place them where you will see them during a hard day: on the bathroom mirror, the dashboard, or beside your keys. Read them slowly, one at a time, and notice which one meets the particular fear you are carrying. Returning to the same verse for a week is often more useful than moving quickly through many.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Turn “Do not be afraid” into “Lord, I am afraid, and I choose to trust you with this.” You may find that a verse which felt distant on Monday becomes personal by Friday, and that is a sign the Lord is working in the place where you were anxious.

A Short Prayer for Finding Courage

Lord, you know the fears I am carrying today, including the ones I have not named to anyone else. I do not pretend they are small. Remind me that you are with me in the room, in the phone call, and in the decision I have been avoiding. Give me the courage to take the next honest step, even if my hands are shaking. Let me remember that my strength comes from you and not from my own certainty. Amen.
