This list gives you Bible passages about fresh starts, grouped by the situations where a new beginning feels most needed: a morning when yesterday still weighs on you, a season of failure, or a change you did not expect. These verses share one thread. God is the one who makes things new, and a new start does not depend on how well you performed before.

Verses for Mornings When Yesterday Still Weighs on You

Some mornings begin with regret already in your chest. These passages speak to that moment by describing God’s mercy as something renewed each day rather than earned once and then used up.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This passage was written by someone who had watched Jerusalem fall, yet it still names morning as the time God’s mercies appear. Before you open your phone or your email, pause and name one specific mercy you expect to see today, however small.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God invites his people to stop dwelling on former things. When you notice yourself replaying an old mistake, try saying the phrase “new thing” out loud and then take one practical step toward whatever today actually requires.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul writes that anyone united with Christ is a new creation, and that the old has passed away. Write this verse on a card and place it where you will see it when shame tries to name you by your worst day.

Verses for Seasons of Failure and Second Chances

A fresh start matters most when you have failed badly, not only when life simply feels tired. The passages in this group come from people who got things wrong and still heard God call them forward again.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David asks God for a clean heart and a steadfast spirit after a serious sin. Offer this as a prayer when you know you need more than a new routine, and let the request be specific about the one area where you want God to work.

Micah 7:18-19

18 Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. 19 He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

(WEB)

Micah describes a God who pardons transgression and casts sins into the depths of the sea. Choose one sin you have confessed and decide today that you will stop bringing it back up in your own mind.

John 21:15-17

15 So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

(WEB)

After Peter’s denial, Jesus asks him three times whether he loves him and then gives him work to do. Think about one concrete responsibility you could take up again, trusting that failure does not end your calling.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

(WEB)

God promises to give a new heart and a new spirit to his people. When change feels impossible, remember that this promise is about what God does in you, and ask him to show you where your heart needs softening today.

Verses for Starting Over in Changing Circumstances

Sometimes the need for a fresh start comes from outside: a move, a job loss, a loss of health, or a season that has simply ended. These passages speak to God’s presence in unfamiliar ground.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks of those who wait on the Lord and find their strength renewed. Pick one task you have been dreading in your new situation and do it slowly, treating each step as a small act of waiting rather than a test you must pass.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous as he takes over leadership after Moses. Before the first hard day in an unfamiliar role, say this verse aloud and name one person who can walk alongside you this week.

Ruth 1:16

Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

(WEB)

Ruth chooses to leave her homeland and go with Naomi into an uncertain future. Consider where you have already chosen faithfulness in a new setting, and thank God for one small loyalty you have kept there.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

The one seated on the throne declares that he is making all things new. Let this verse steady you when a new beginning feels fragile, and note one area where you trust God to bring renewal over the coming months.

Verses for Beginning Again with Hope

These last passages look ahead. They invite you to hold a fresh start not only as relief from the past but as a place where God keeps working toward something good.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul says he presses on toward the goal, forgetting what lies behind. Write down one thing you are reaching forward toward this month and place the note somewhere you pass each day.

Lamentations 3:24

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”

(WEB)

The same chapter that speaks of renewed mercies also says the Lord is our portion, and so we hope in him. Use this verse as a hope check: at the end of the day, ask where you saw God’s faithfulness even if the day felt ordinary.

Psalm 40:2-3

2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes being lifted out of a pit and set on firm ground with a new song in his mouth. Consider one thing God has already rescued you from and sing or speak a short thank-you for that rescue.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, because a harvest will come in its time. When a fresh start feels slow to show results, pick one faithful action for this week and keep doing it.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists the things that cannot separate us from God’s love. Read this passage when you fear that a new start must be proven before God will receive you, and let it remind you that his love comes first.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on a note card or in a notes app, and keep them where you already look during the day, such as on the bathroom mirror or as your phone’s lock screen. Read them slowly at the start of your day, before the messages and tasks begin, so that your first thought is about God’s mercy rather than your to-do list.

When a fresh start feels hard, pray the verse back to God in your own words. Choose one passage from the group that fits your situation, speak it aloud, and then add one honest sentence about what you need from him that day. Return to the same verse for a week or more, since fresh starts usually take time to settle into daily life.

A Short Prayer for Fresh Starts

Lord, you are the one who makes things new, and I bring you the places where I need a new beginning. Some of my past still sits heavily on me, and some of my present feels uncertain. Forgive what needs forgiving, and give me a clean heart and a steady spirit for the day ahead. Help me to receive your mercy as fresh each morning, and to take the next faithful step even when I cannot see the whole path. Thank you that my worth does not depend on how well I start again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
