This list gives you Bible passages about God’s comfort, arranged by the moments when people most often need them: grief, fear, and plain exhaustion. It is written for anyone who has searched for words of consolation and wants more than a single line to hold onto. These verses share one thread: God does not merely tell us to be calm, he comes near to the one who is hurting and stays there.

Verses for Grief and Loss

Grief arrives without warning and often lingers longer than anyone expects. The passages below speak to the heaviness of loss and to the nearness of the God who sees the broken heart.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse is for the person sitting in the car after the funeral, unable to start the engine. Notice that the psalmist does not ask the brokenhearted to fix themselves first. Try saying the verse aloud once in the car, then let it be enough for the moment.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus calls mourners blessed, which surprises many readers. He is not praising the pain itself but promising that sorrow is not the end of the story. Write this one on an index card and place it near the kitchen sink, where grief often surfaces during ordinary chores.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the source of every comfort, and he says that comfort is passed on to others. Think of one person who once helped you through a loss and send them a short message this week. Comfort received tends to become comfort shared.

Verses for Fear and Anxiety

Fear can show up at three in the morning, in a hospital corridor, or in an inbox that holds bad news. These passages address the racing mind and the God who promises to hold steady when we cannot.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly here, using three promises in a row: presence, strength and help. When fear rises, try repeating the verse slowly, pausing after each promise. You may find that the first promise, “I am with you,” is the one your heart needs most.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David admits he is afraid, and then he decides what to do with that fear. He chooses trust. Practise this by naming one specific fear in prayer, then deliberately placing it in God’s hands before you move to the next task.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxiety to prayer to peace in a single breath. The peace he describes guards the heart and mind, which is a helpful image for a restless evening. Before bed, list what worries you, then pray through each item, leaving them with God rather than rehearsing them again.

Verses for Weariness and Weakness

Sometimes the struggle is not a single crisis but a long season of being worn thin. The following verses speak to the tired parent, the caregiver, and the person who has run out of strength.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus does not ask the weary to prove their worth before coming to him. He simply invites them. On a day when you feel depleted, sit quietly for two minutes and accept that invitation, without trying to produce any particular feeling.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

The prophet notes that even the young grow tired, yet God gives strength to those who wait on him. Waiting here is active trust, not idle passivity. Keep this passage open during a demanding week and return to it each time you feel your energy draining away.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits that body and heart can fail, and then names God as the strength that does not fail. When your own reserves run low, try writing this verse on a note and carrying it in your pocket, so the reminder is within reach during the hardest hour.

How to Use These Verses

Start with one passage rather than trying to memorise the whole list. Copy it by hand into a notebook, adding the date and a sentence about what you were facing. Over months, that notebook becomes a record of how God has met you in different seasons, and it is often the most useful comfort of all.

Read these verses at the times when comfort is most needed: first thing in the morning, before a difficult conversation, or late at night when sleep will not come. Pray the verse back to God in your own words. Saying “Lord, you promised to be near, so be near to me now” turns Scripture into a conversation rather than a recitation.

A Short Prayer for God’s Comfort

Father, you know the places in my life where I hurt and where I feel afraid. I bring you my grief, my worry and my tiredness just as they are, without pretending they are smaller than they are. Hold me the way a parent holds a child who has cried until there are no more words. Remind me, through these scriptures, that you are near and that you are not overwhelmed by what overwhelms me. Give me enough strength for today and enough trust for tomorrow. Amen.
