This list gathers passages where Jesus himself teaches, so you can read his words in the order he spoke them and see what he asked of his followers. It is for anyone who wants to know what Jesus taught and how those lessons apply to ordinary days, from a difficult conversation at work to a quiet evening at home. Across these verses, Jesus returns again and again to love, humility, forgiveness, trust and the kingdom of God, often through the simple stories he told.

Verses on Loving God and Neighbor

Jesus named love as the center of the whole law, and he gave his followers a standard that reaches into every relationship. These passages show what that love looks like when it is practiced rather than merely felt.

Matthew 22:37-39

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

When a lawyer asked Jesus which command mattered most, he answered with two commands, not one. Try naming one person you find hard to love this week and pray for them by name each morning before you begin your work.

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

(WEB)

Jesus gave this command on the night before his death, and he tied it to how others would recognize his disciples. Before you respond to a frustrating message today, pause and ask how you would answer if the person were a fellow believer you were trying to honor.

Luke 10:36-37

36 Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

(WEB)

After telling the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus turned the question around and asked who had acted as a neighbor. Look for one practical need near you this week, such as a neighbor carrying groceries or a coworker who seems worn down, and step toward it.

Verses on Forgiveness and Mercy

Jesus taught his disciples to forgive as they had been forgiven, and he often connected mercy received with mercy given. These verses address the grudges and debts that build up in everyday life.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Right after teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus stressed that forgiving others matters to the life of the one who prays. When resentment rises today, name the wrong out loud to God and ask him to help you release it, even if the feeling takes time to follow.

Matthew 18:21-22

21 Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I don’t tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.

(WEB)

Peter asked how many times he needed to forgive, and Jesus answered with a number meant to show that forgiveness has no tidy limit. If the same hurt keeps returning to your mind, write it down once, then give it to God and choose to stop replaying it.

Luke 6:36

“Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.

(WEB)

Jesus asked his listeners to be merciful as their Father is merciful, placing mercy at the heart of God’s own character. Before you judge someone’s motives in a tense moment, remember a time you needed grace and offer that same patience to them.

Verses on Trust and Anxious Hearts

Jesus spoke directly to worry about food, clothing and tomorrow, pointing his listeners to the Father’s care for birds and wildflowers. These passages invite you to bring your concerns into the light of that care.

Matthew 6:33-34

33 But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Jesus told his listeners to seek God’s kingdom first and to leave tomorrow’s worries for tomorrow. Write down the one task that is pressing on you most today and set it beside a short prayer asking God to guide your next step.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

In the upper room Jesus promised a peace different from what the world offers, and he told his friends not to let their hearts be troubled. When sleep feels far away, speak this promise slowly and ask for the peace he describes.

Luke 12:6-7

6 “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

(WEB)

Jesus pointed to sparrows sold cheaply and noted that God knows even the hairs of your head. Think of one small detail about your day that feels too minor to mention, and tell God about it anyway, trusting that he pays attention.

Verses on Humility and Serving Others

Jesus overturned ideas of greatness by taking the lowest place himself and calling his followers to do the same. These verses shape how you approach authority, service and recognition.

Matthew 20:26-28

26 It shall not be so among you, but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 27 Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Jesus told his disciples that whoever wants to be great must serve, following the pattern of the Son of Man. Look for one task at home or work that no one has asked you to do, and do it quietly without mentioning it to anyone.

Mark 9:35

He sat down, and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.”

(WEB)

Jesus sat down, called the Twelve together, and taught that the first must be last and servant of all. The next time you feel the pull to be noticed, choose to make someone else’s idea or work the focus of the conversation.

Matthew 11:28-29

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

(WEB)

Jesus invited tired and burdened people to come to him and learn from his gentle and humble heart. If you are carrying a load that feels too heavy, take a few minutes to sit quietly and tell him exactly what is weighing on you.

How to Use These Verses

Many people find it helpful to copy one verse each week onto an index card and keep it where they will see it, such as on the bathroom mirror, the dashboard, or beside the coffee maker. Reading the card aloud before a meeting or a hard conversation can turn a passing thought into something you actually remember when pressure rises.

You might also read a single passage slowly three days in a row, asking a simple question each time: what did Jesus mean, and what would it look like for me to live it today? Pair that reading with a short prayer, asking him to show you one specific change to make before the day ends, and then notice what he brings to mind.

A Short Prayer for Jesus’ Teachings

Lord Jesus, thank you for speaking plainly to ordinary people about love, forgiveness, trust and service. Help me to hear your words as more than facts to remember, and open my heart to the ways you want me to live them out today. Where I am quick to judge, teach me mercy, and where I am anxious, teach me to rest in your care. Shape my priorities around your kingdom, and give me the humility to serve without needing recognition. Amen.
