This list gives you Scripture that speaks to keeping promises, whether you are trying to honor a commitment you made to a friend, a spouse, a child, a coworker, or God himself. Each verse below points to the faithfulness of God as the pattern and power for our own word-keeping.

What these verses share is a steady picture of a God who does what he says and a call to let that reliability shape how we speak and act. Read them slowly, and let them reframe a promise you are tempted to break or a commitment that has grown heavy.

Verses for Remembering God Keeps His Word

When you are discouraged about your own follow-through, it helps to start with the One who never fails to keep what he has spoken. These verses root your faithfulness in his.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that God does not lie or change his mind about what he has pledged. Before a hard conversation where you need to say you will follow through, pause and recall that your reliability is meant to mirror his.

Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the LORD your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations…

(WEB)

Here faithfulness is tied to God’s covenant love stretching across generations. Write this verse on a card for your commute, and let it remind you that long-term commitments can be kept one day at a time.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in grief, the writer notices that God’s faithfulness is renewed each morning. If you wake feeling you have already failed a promise, let this verse meet you at the kitchen table and ask for fresh mercy for the day ahead.

Verses for Keeping Your Own Word

These passages speak directly to the promises you make to others. They describe integrity in ordinary speech, from a simple yes to a costly vow.

Psalm 15:4

In whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change…

(WEB)

This psalm describes the person who keeps a pledge even when it costs them. Think of one commitment this week that will be inconvenient, and decide now that you will honor it.

Matthew 5:37

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

(WEB)

Jesus values simple, truthful speech over elaborate oaths. Before you agree to something new, pause and ask whether you can truly follow through, then answer plainly.

Ecclesiastes 5:4-5

4 When you vow a vow to God, don’t defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.

(WEB)

The teacher warns against making vows carelessly and then failing to fulfill them. Keep a calendar where you record what you have said yes to, so your word is never left to memory alone.

Proverbs 11:3

The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.

(WEB)

Integrity guides the upright, while dishonesty ruins. When you feel tempted to cut a corner on a promise, remember that small acts of faithfulness shape the kind of person you are becoming.

Verses for Hard Days When a Promise Is Costly

Some promises are easy to keep when life is calm and very hard when it is not. These verses are for the moments when keeping your word feels like pushing a boulder uphill.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

Committing your way to the Lord is itself a kind of promise, and this verse invites you to trust that he will act. When a commitment strains you, pray over it before you decide to bow out.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Strength for long obligations comes from waiting on the Lord rather than from your own stamina. Name the promise that feels heaviest and ask for renewed energy to carry it, one step at a time.

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.

(WEB)

The writer urges believers to hold fast the confession of their hope without wavering, because God is faithful. Find one person who can walk alongside you, and ask them to check in on your progress.

Romans 4:20-21

20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.

(WEB)

Abraham was fully convinced that God would do what he had promised. Speak aloud the specific promise you are trying to keep and remind yourself why you said yes in the first place.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Doing good, including keeping your word, can feel tiring over time, yet the harvest comes at the right season. Choose one small step today that moves a long commitment forward, however slowly.

2 Corinthians 1:20

For however many are the promises of God, in him is the “Yes.” Therefore also through him is the “Amen”, to the glory of God through us.

(WEB)

Every promise of God finds its yes in Christ. Let this truth steady you when you feel your own yes is too weak, because your faithfulness rests on his.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that speak to the promise you are currently struggling to keep. Write them on a note card or in the notes app on your phone, and place it where you will see it at the start of the day, such as on the bathroom mirror or beside your coffee maker.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Ask him to remind you of his faithfulness when you feel tempted to break your word, and thank him each evening for any promise you were able to keep, however small.

A Short Prayer for Keeping Promises

Lord, you are faithful in every word you speak, and I thank you that you never fail to keep your promises to me. Help me to reflect that faithfulness in the commitments I make to others. Where I have said yes too quickly, give me wisdom to speak honestly, and where I have fallen short, give me the courage to make things right. Strengthen me for the promises I am carrying today, and let my word be trustworthy because it rests in you. Amen.
