This list gives you Bible passages about overcoming pride, arranged by the moments when pride usually shows up: the morning you feel sure of yourself, the conversation where you need to be right, the success that tempts you to take the credit, and the failure that tempts you to hide. It is for anyone who has noticed that their own confidence has begun to crowd out God and other people. The verses here share one thread: pride tells us we are the center of the story, while Scripture consistently points us back to God as the one who gives, judges, and lifts up.

Verses for the Morning Before You Feel Sure of Yourself

Pride often starts quietly, before any meeting or argument, in the way we assume our plans will work. These verses speak to that early confidence and ask us to hold our plans loosely in God’s hands.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

(WEB)

Read this verse before you open your calendar for the day. Name one plan you are relying on too heavily, and ask God to show you where you have stopped depending on him for the outcome.

James 4:13-15

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.” 14 Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. 15 For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”

(WEB)

James reminds us that our plans are provisional and that the future belongs to God. Write one sentence in your planner that begins with “If the Lord wills,” and let it reset how you approach the day.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.

(WEB)

This verse links pride with disgrace and humility with wisdom. Before you make a decision today, ask yourself whether you have sought counsel or only trusted your own instincts.

Verses for the Conversation Where You Need to Be Right

Pride shows up most sharply when someone challenges us. The passages in this section address the urge to win an argument, defend our image, or look down on someone who disagrees with us.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to count others as more important than themselves. In your next disagreement, pause and state the other person’s view back to them in a way they would recognize as fair before you give your own.

Romans 12:3

For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.

(WEB)

This verse warns against thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought. Before you answer a critic, ask whether your response is about the truth or about protecting your standing.

Proverbs 18:2

A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.

(WEB)

A fool takes pleasure in airing his own opinion. Notice the next time you feel the pull to speak just to be heard, and choose to ask one question before you offer a statement.

Ephesians 4:2

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love…

(WEB)

Paul calls for humility, gentleness, and patience bearing with one another in love. Choose one person in your life who irritates you and pray for them by name this week.

Verses for When Success Tempts You to Take the Credit

Pride grows easily when things go well. These verses remind us that every gift, skill, and opportunity has a source outside ourselves, and that gratitude is the antidote to self-congratulation.

1 Corinthians 4:7

For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

(WEB)

Paul asks what we have that we did not receive. When you finish a project well, write down three people or circumstances that made it possible before you accept any praise.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18

17 And lest you say in your heart, “My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.” 18 But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is today.

(WEB)

Moses warns Israel not to say that their power produced their wealth. Give God thanks specifically for one success this week, and name the help you received along the way.

Psalm 115:1

Not to us, the LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake.

(WEB)

This psalm directs glory away from us and toward God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. Practice redirecting credit: when someone compliments your work, say plainly where the grace behind it came from.

Galatians 6:3

For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

(WEB)

Paul says that anyone who thinks they are something when they are nothing deceives themselves. Take a moment to examine your work honestly and ask God to show you where you have been overestimating your part.

Verses for When Failure Tempts You to Hide

Pride can also wear the mask of shame. When we fail, we may hide, defend, or blame rather than admit our need. These passages speak to the humility that brings us honestly before God and others.

Proverbs 28:13

He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

(WEB)

This verse says that concealing sin does not prosper, while confession brings mercy. Think of one mistake you have been covering up, and take one small step toward telling the truth to someone you trust.

1 Peter 5:5-6

5 Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time…

(WEB)

Peter urges us to clothe ourselves with humility and to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand. Pray a brief prayer of surrender today, asking God to lift you up in his time rather than in your own.

Psalm 139:23-24

23 Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

(WEB)

David invites God to search his heart and reveal any hurtful way in him. Set aside five minutes tonight and pray these words slowly, listening for anything that surfaces.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord requires: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Choose one area of your life this week where walking humbly would change how you act.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most directly to you on an index card or in the notes app on your phone. Keep them where you will see them during your usual pressure points, such as before a meeting, in the car after a difficult talk, or at the sink after a long day. Reading one verse a day for a week is often more helpful than reading the whole list at once.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Turn a line like “clothe yourselves with humility” into a request, and be specific about the situation where you need it. Pride rarely disappears in one moment, so return to these passages as often as you need to, and let each return be an act of trust rather than a verdict on your failure.

A Short Prayer for Overcoming Pride

Lord, you see the parts of my heart that I would rather keep hidden. I confess that I often want to be seen, praised, and right, and that I forget how much I depend on you for every breath and every gift. Search me and show me where pride has taken root. Teach me to hold my plans loosely, to listen before I speak, and to give you the credit for what you have done through me. Make me gentle with others and honest about my own weakness. Lift me up in your time and in your way. Amen.
