This list gives you Scripture to read, pray and hold onto if you are raising children, whether you are up at night with a newborn, standing in a school parking lot wondering whether you got it right, or watching a teenager pull away. The verses here are for parents and grandparents who want God’s word to shape how they love, correct and trust the young people in their care. What these passages share is a steady picture of God as the one who gives children, teaches them, goes before them, and keeps faithful watch over the family that trusts him.

Verses for the Early Years of Parenting

When children are small, the days are full of feeding, bathing, bedtimes and repeated instructions. These verses remind you that the work has a purpose beyond the next task, and that God sees the small faithful things you do when no one else notices.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

This verse calls children a gift from the Lord, which can change how you see the exhausting parts of the day. Try naming one specific thing about your child each morning and thanking God for it before the rush begins.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Proverbs speaks of training children in the way they should go, which is patient, daily work rather than a single big lesson. Choose one habit you want to build this week, such as family prayer at the dinner table, and practice it consistently.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Moses told parents to talk about God’s commands while sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down and rising up. Look for one ordinary moment today, such as the drive to school, and speak one true thing about God’s goodness into it.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

This psalm describes the Lord’s tender compassion, like a father’s love for his children. When your patience runs thin, pause and ask God to show you that same tenderness toward your child.

Verses for the Hard Days and Hard Conversations

Raising children means facing disobedience, fear, illness and disappointment, sometimes all in one week. These verses speak to the moments when you feel out of your depth and need God to steady both you and your child.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Isaiah pictures God as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms and gently leads the mother sheep. Before a hard talk with your child, picture yourself being led in the same gentle way, then speak to them with that gentleness.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers not to provoke their children to anger but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Before you correct your child today, ask yourself whether your tone is training them toward God or wearing down their trust.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

The psalmist writes that when he is afraid, he will trust in God. If worry about your child keeps you awake, say this line aloud as a short prayer, then name the specific fear you are giving to God.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James promises that God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks. When you do not know how to handle a situation with your child, ask God for wisdom before you respond, even if the request is only a single sentence.

Verses for Trusting God With Grown Children

As children grow older, they make choices you cannot control, and the parenting role shifts toward prayer, encouragement and open doors. These verses help you release what is out of your hands while staying present and hopeful.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Proverbs urges trust in the Lord with all your heart rather than leaning on your own understanding. Write your teenager’s name on a card, pray over it, and then deliberately leave the outcome with God for the rest of the day.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

John writes that he has no greater joy than hearing his children walk in the truth. Let this verse shape your prayers by asking God to draw your children into truth and to give you joy in watching them grow.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The Lord keeps your going out and your coming in, now and forever. Tonight, when your child leaves for school, work, or a trip, pray this promise over the time they are apart from you.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul is confident that God, who began a good work, will carry it on to completion. Remember that the growth you see in your child is not finished, and that God is still at work in them.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Even in a book of grief, these verses declare that God’s mercies are new every morning. On the mornings when yesterday’s conflict still hangs over the house, begin the day by receiving that fresh mercy for yourself and your child.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on index cards and place them where your family already gathers, such as the kitchen counter, the bathroom mirror or the inside of a cabinet door. Read them when you are waiting for the kettle to boil, sitting in the car before going inside, or standing at a child’s bedside.

Pray the verses back to God in your own words rather than only reading them. Put a child’s name in the blank, such as asking God to keep Sarah in his care, and return to the same verse for a week so it can settle into your heart.

A Short Prayer for raising children

Lord, you are the one who gave us these children, and you know them better than we ever will. We confess that we often feel unprepared, tired and unsure of the next right word. Give us patience when the day is long, wisdom when we do not know what to say, and a tender heart when our children push us away. Teach us to train them in your ways by the way we live as much as by what we say. Keep watch over their going out and their coming in, and draw them close to you all their days. Amen.
