This list gives you Bible verses about sleep that you can read at bedtime, in the middle of a restless night, or first thing in the morning when you are still tired. It is for anyone who lies awake with worry, struggles to switch off after a long day, or wants to start the day trusting God rather than dreading it. Most of these passages share one truth: rest is not something you earn by getting everything finished, but a gift from a God who keeps watch while you sleep.

Verses for the Night When Your Mind Will Not Quiet

Some nights the thoughts keep coming: unfinished tasks, unanswered messages, things you cannot fix before morning. The verses in this group speak to a mind that refuses to settle, pointing you toward the One who holds your days and nights in his hands.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

David names the peace he feels as a gift, not a result of his own effort. Tonight, before you turn off the light, try saying a single sentence aloud to God that begins with “I will lie down,” and let that be your handoff of the day’s worries.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse confronts the habit of working late to prove your worth. Write one thing you are tempted to keep working on past bedtime, then put the paper where you will see it in the morning as a reminder that God cares for you while you rest.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul moves from anxious thoughts straight to prayer and then to peace. When your mind starts racing, name the specific worry out loud as a prayer, then breathe slowly and count three breaths while you thank God for one thing he has already provided.

Verses About God Who Keeps Watch While You Sleep

Lying still in the dark can make you feel alone or unguarded. These passages describe a God who does not slumber or sleep, which means you can close your eyes without leaving your life unattended.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

The psalmist gives a picture of a watchman who never nods off. When fear of the dark or of the unknown rises, picture God as the watchman on duty and let that picture carry you into sleep.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

David wrote this after facing enemies, yet he lay down and slept, sustained by the Lord. Think of one situation that is still unresolved and tell God you are leaving it with him for the night, then rest without reopening the question.

Proverbs 3:24

When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.

(WEB)

Wisdom here promises that a settled heart can lie down without dread. Before sleep, write down one fear you carry and set the note aside, treating it as entrusted to the Lord rather than as something you must solve before dawn.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Perfect peace is tied to a mind that stays fixed on God. If you wake in the night, repeat a short phrase such as “You are my peace” slowly until your breathing matches the rhythm of the words.

Verses for Waking Up With a Fresh Start

Rest is not only about closing the day. These verses look at the morning, when God’s faithfulness is new again and the night’s weariness begins to lift.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote these words from a place of grief, yet he remembered that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. Keep a notebook beside your bed and, as soon as you wake, write the date and one new mercy you notice.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

Weeping may stay for a night, but joy comes in the morning. If you slept poorly or went to bed heavy, read this verse before checking your phone, and let the morning begin with God’s word instead of news or noise.

Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks to hear God’s loving-kindness in the morning. Each day, make the first thing you say upon waking a short prayer asking God to show you where to walk that day.

Psalm 5:3

The LORD, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

(WEB)

This verse describes bringing your requests to God early, before the day takes over. Sit for two minutes before getting out of bed, name your plans for the day, and hand each one to the Lord.

Verses for Rest Without Guilt

Many people feel they must justify sleep, as if rest were a failure of discipline. These verses speak plainly about God’s design for rest and encourage you to receive it without shame.

Genesis 2:2-3

2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.

(WEB)

God himself rested on the seventh day, and Scripture calls that day holy. Choose one evening this week when you will stop work at a set time and treat the hour as a deliberate act of trust.

Mark 6:31

He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

(WEB)

Jesus invited his tired disciples to come away and rest, even when people were still coming to them. When you feel pressure to keep going, remember that rest was part of the work Jesus himself modeled, and schedule a quiet space before bed.

Matthew 11:28-29

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

(WEB)

Jesus offers rest to those who are weary and burdened. Tonight, name the heaviest load you are carrying, then imagine setting it down at his feet before you lie down.

How to Use These Verses

Write three or four of these verses on index cards and keep them on your nightstand, in your wallet, or taped to the bathroom mirror. Reading one card before bed gives your mind a focus other than the day’s problems, and reading the same card the next morning helps you begin the day with the same truth.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn a line such as Psalm 4:8 into a sentence you say to God, like “Lord, I will lie down and sleep because you alone keep me safe.” Praying Scripture this way helps you rest in God’s promises rather than in your own ability to calm down.

A Short Prayer for Sleep

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day with my hands open. Some of what I carried was good, and some of it was too heavy for me. I give you the unfinished work, the words I wish I had not said, and the worries I cannot solve tonight. Hold them for me while I sleep, and remind me that you do not slumber or grow tired.

Watch over the people I love, and over the ones who cannot rest tonight because of pain, fear, or loneliness. Renew my strength when morning comes, and let me meet the new day with gratitude for your mercies. Thank you that I can lie down in peace because you are awake. Amen.
