2 Corinthians 9:7 teaches that giving should come from a settled decision of the heart, made freely rather than out of pressure, guilt or resentment. Paul also tells us God delights in a giver who gives with joy. The apostle Paul wrote this to the church in Corinth as part of a larger appeal to help believers in Jerusalem who were in need.

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.

What 2 Corinthians 9:7 Means

The verse begins by saying each person should give “according as he has determined in his heart.” That phrase puts the decision where it belongs, in the inner life of the giver. Paul is not asking people to give whatever a leader demands or whatever a neighbor expects. He wants each person to think it through before God and to reach a clear, honest conclusion about what they can and should offer.

Next, Paul rules out two attitudes: grudging giving and giving under compulsion. Grudging giving is the reluctant handing over of money while wishing you could keep it. Giving under compulsion is doing it because you feel forced by pressure, shame or obligation. Both drain the gift of its meaning, even if the amount is generous. The verse ends by saying God loves a cheerful giver, which tells us that God values the spirit in which a gift is made.

It is important to read this verse carefully. It does not promise that generous people will become wealthy, nor does it say a gift earns God’s favor. It describes how a willing and joyful heart pleases God, and it leaves the amount and the method to each person’s conscience and circumstances.

The Context of 2 Corinthians 9:7

Second Corinthians is one of Paul’s letters to the believers in Corinth, a city known for wealth, competition and a mix of cultures. Paul had a complicated relationship with this church, and in these chapters he writes about a collection he was gathering from the churches in Macedonia and Achaia to support believers in Jerusalem during a time of hardship. The Corinthians had earlier promised to contribute, and Paul was sending brothers ahead to make sure their gift was ready.

Just before verse 7, Paul makes the point that sowing generously brings a generous harvest, and that God is able to supply every need so that his people can keep doing good. Just after, he says God will multiply the seed and increase the fruit of their righteousness. Read in that setting, the verse is not a demand for guilt-driven giving but an encouragement to give freely, trusting that God is the true source of supply.

Key Phrases in 2 Corinthians 9:7

Proverbs 11:24-25

24 There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty. 25 The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.

These verses describe how generous people often find their lives enriched, while the stingy can end up with less. They echo Paul’s teaching that giving is tied to the way God blesses and sustains his people, and they show that generosity is a wise and joyful way of living.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Here Paul recalls the words of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive. This saying helps explain why a cheerful giver experiences joy, because the act of giving reflects the heart of Christ and brings a deeper satisfaction than keeping everything for oneself.

A Short Prayer From 2 Corinthians 9:7

Lord, you have given me far more than I could ever repay, and I thank you for your steady provision. Please search my heart when I think about giving, and show me where resentment or pressure has crept in. Help me decide what to give with a clear and honest mind, and let my generosity flow from gladness rather than fear. Thank you that you love a cheerful giver, and that you are able to supply all that I need so that I can keep doing good. Amen.
