Revelation 3:16 means that God is strongly displeased with a faith that is comfortable and half-committed, neither warm with devotion nor cold and open about its unbelief. The verse is a warning, not a casual remark, and it is directed at a church that thought it was doing fine. Jesus speaks it through the risen Christ to the assembly in Laodicea, a city known for its wealth, banking and lukewarm mineral water.

So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth.

What Revelation 3:16 Means

The phrase “because you are lukewarm” names the problem. Lukewarm water is useless for drinking or washing, and the image points to a faith that has lost its usefulness and its life. The church is not hostile to Christ, but it has settled into a routine that no longer costs anything, and it no longer feels the need for him.

The image of being “vomited out of my mouth” is deliberately disgusting. It shows that God does not simply tolerate a tepid community; he rejects it as something that makes him sick. The verse does not promise that the church is beyond repair, since the surrounding passage calls them to repentance, but it does say that comfortable indifference is not a safe place to stay.

The Context of Revelation 3:16

Revelation was written by the apostle John, who was exiled on the island of Patmos, to seven real churches in the province of Asia. Laodicea was one of them, and its residents took pride in their riches. Verse 17 quotes their own boast, “I am rich… and have need of nothing,” which shows that the lukewarmness was tied to self-sufficiency rather than to obvious sin.

Read in this setting, the verse is less about a lack of feeling and more about a satisfied heart that believes it has no further need of God. The counsel that follows in verses 18 and 19, to buy gold refined by fire and to repent, shows that Jesus still loves these people and wants them to recognize their real spiritual poverty.

Key Phrases in Revelation 3:16

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David’s prayer for a clean heart and a steadfast spirit shows the inner renewal that a lukewarm person needs. Revelation 3:16 names the drift, and this psalm gives words for asking God to restore what has gone cold.

Romans 12:11

Not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord…

(WEB)

Paul urges believers not to be lazy in zeal while staying fervent in spirit and serving the Lord. The verse describes the warmth that Revelation 3:16 says Laodicea had lost, giving a positive picture of the life God desires.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 3:16

Lord, you see me more clearly than I see myself, and you know where my faith has grown comfortable and thin. I do not want to be a half-hearted believer who thinks he has need of nothing. Warm my heart again, and show me the places where I have settled for going through the motions. Give me the courage to repent and the desire to draw near to you. Amen.
