Ruth 3:5 is Ruth’s answer to Naomi’s plan. When her mother-in-law tells her how to approach Boaz at the threshing floor, Ruth replies that she will do exactly what Naomi has said. It is a short, willing yes from a younger woman who trusts an older woman’s wisdom in a risky and uncertain moment. Ruth speaks these words to Naomi, her mother-in-law, just before she goes down to meet Boaz.
She said to her, “All that you say, I will do.”

What Ruth 3:5 Means
The verse is brief, but its meaning is clear. Ruth says, in effect, “Everything you have told me, I will carry out.” The word “all” matters here. Ruth is not agreeing to only the parts of the plan that feel safe or comfortable. She accepts the whole of it, including the instructions to wash, dress carefully, wait until Boaz has finished eating and drinking, and then lie down at his feet.
The verse does not explain why the plan will work or promise how Boaz will respond. Ruth agrees to act, not to a guaranteed result. What she commits to is her own faithful obedience within a situation whose outcome she cannot see. That is a different thing from a promise that everything will turn out well.
The Context of Ruth 3:5
The Book of Ruth is a short narrative in the Old Testament, usually read as part of the historical books. It is traditionally attributed to the prophet Samuel, though the author is not named in the text itself. It was written for an Israelite audience and tells the story of a Moabite widow who returns to Bethlehem with Naomi and finds a place among God’s people through her loyalty and her kinsman-redeemer, Boaz.
Just before verse 5, Naomi explains that Boaz is a close relative who will be winnowing barley that night. She tells Ruth how to make herself known to him at the right moment. Right after verse 5, the Bible records that Ruth went down to the threshing floor and did everything Naomi had told her. Read with that setting, verse 5 is not a passing remark. It is the hinge on which the whole scene turns, the point where Ruth moves from listening to acting.
Key Phrases in Ruth 3:5
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

These verses call believers to trust the Lord with all their heart and not lean only on their own understanding. Like Ruth, they point to a readiness to move forward on God’s guidance even when the path is not fully visible.
Ruth 1:16
Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

Earlier in the book, Ruth pledges loyalty to Naomi with the words “where you go, I will go.” Reading that promise alongside verse 5 shows that Ruth’s obedience in chapter 3 grows out of a commitment she made long before.
A Short Prayer From Ruth 3:5
Lord, you see the plans I am asked to follow and the steps I am not sure I understand. Help me to listen to wise counsel with an open heart and to act on what I have been given, even when I cannot see where it leads. Give me Ruth’s kind of steady willingness, rooted in trust in you and in love for the people around me. Let my yes to you be sincere, and let my faithful steps honor you. Amen.
