John 2:5 records Mary, Jesus’ mother, telling the servants at a wedding in Cana to do whatever Jesus tells them. Her short instruction is the last thing she says in the Gospel of John before Jesus turns water into wine, and it shows a mother who trusts her son and wants others to listen to him. The verse is spoken to the servants at the feast, the people who would be asked to carry out his request.
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

What John 2:5 Means
“His mother said” tells us this is a direct, personal moment rather than a formal announcement. Mary is not giving a theological lecture. She sees a practical problem, the wine has run out, and she trusts that her son can do something about it. Her words “whatever he says to you” place Jesus in the role of authority over the household’s needs, even though the servants do not yet know what he plans.
“Do it” is a plain, active instruction. Mary asks the servants to take the risk of obeying a command whose outcome they cannot foresee. The verse does not promise that every request will turn out as we hope, nor does it explain why Jesus chose this moment. It shows a response of simple obedience to Christ, followed by a sign that God’s provision can arrive in unexpected ways.
The Context of John 2:5
The Gospel of John is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who wrote to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, so that readers might believe and have life. The wedding at Cana is the first of the signs in this Gospel, which John uses to reveal Jesus’ glory. The setting is a village wedding, a joyful occasion where running out of wine would have been an embarrassment for the family hosting the feast.
Just before verse 5, Mary tells Jesus about the shortage and he answers that his hour has not yet come. In verses 6 through 8, which follow, Jesus directs the servants to fill six stone water jars and draw out what is needed for the ruler of the feast. Read with those verses, Mary’s instruction shows the servants moving in faith before any miracle is visible, and it prepares the reader for the sign that follows.
Key Phrases in John 2:5
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

This passage calls believers to trust the Lord fully rather than relying only on their own understanding. Like Mary’s instruction at Cana, it asks for confident reliance on God’s guidance even when the path ahead is not fully visible.
John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

Jesus links love for him with keeping his commands. This connects closely with John 2:5, where obedience to Jesus’ word is the response his followers are called to show in every season.
A Short Prayer From John 2:5
Lord, you know the small and large things we face each day, and you know when our supplies run low. Help us to listen carefully to your word and to trust you enough to act on it, even when we cannot see how it will turn out. Give us the humility of the servants who did what they were told and the faith of Mary who pointed others to you. Teach us to take the next faithful step, and let your goodness be seen in ways we did not expect. Amen.
