This prayer is for asking God to guard the people you love, whether that means your spouse, children, parents, or the household you share. Pray it when you feel anxious about what the day or night might bring, before a family member leaves on a trip, or when a season of uncertainty has settled over your home. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Prayer for Family Protection

Father, you know every person under this roof and every person who is out in the world today. You know the traffic on the way to work, the phone call that might come at night, the fever that rises without warning, and the friendships and choices that can pull our children in directions we cannot follow. We ask you to surround each one of them with your care. Keep them safe in their bodies, in their minds, and in the places they go when we are not beside them.

Lord, we also ask for protection from the unseen things: fear that creeps into our thoughts, arguments that wound more than they should, and the quiet pressures that wear a family down over time. Guard our hearts and our words. Make our home a place where people feel safe to be honest and gentle with one another. Where we have failed to protect each other, forgive us, and teach us to do better.

Be our shelter and our strength. Go before each of us into the coming days, and stand guard around us when we sleep. We trust that you never slumber and never leave us unattended. Hold our family close and keep us all within your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you are the one who keeps us. Cover my family today, the ones I can see and the ones who are far away. Guard their going out and their coming in, protect them from harm and from the lies that would hurt them, and keep our home steady in your peace. I release my worry into your hands and I trust you with the people I love. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the people who leave your home each morning and return each evening. Ask God to keep them from harm in every movement, from the first step outside to the last step back through the door.

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the picture of a secure place settle in your mind. Pray that your family would learn to rest in God as their refuge, especially when the house feels loud or uncertain.

Proverbs 18:10

The LORD’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the Lord as your family’s strong tower. Ask him to be the first place each of you runs to when fear rises, rather than a last resort.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Bring this promise to God on behalf of anyone in your household who feels weak or afraid. Pray that God would strengthen them and hold them steady when they feel they cannot stand alone.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse for children who are facing new schools, new friends, or new challenges. Ask God to remind them that they go nowhere alone and that he does not leave them to face anything by themselves.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helpful to pray this prayer at a regular time, such as breakfast before the day begins or the moment before bedtime. Stand or sit together if you can, and let each person say one name aloud so that every member of the household is named before God. A small, familiar object such as a cup of coffee, a child’s hand, or a wooden table can help keep your attention on what you are asking.

If you live alone, or if your family is spread across distances, pray it by yourself and name each person individually as you go. You might also invite a friend, a grandparent, or a small group from church to pray it with you, asking them to pray for your family on the days you cannot be together. Keep a simple note of the names so you remember to return to them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your family and walk beside each of you through every day ahead. May he keep your going out and your coming in, guard your hearts with his peace, and make your home a place of safety and rest. May each of you know, deep down, that you are held in the hands of a faithful God.
