Matthew 4:24 tells us that news about Jesus spread quickly across the region of Syria, and that people brought him every kind of sick and suffering person, whom he healed. The verse shows Jesus’ ministry reaching people in every category of need, from physical illness to demonic oppression. It is spoken by Matthew, the Gospel writer, who is describing the early days of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee to his readers.
The report about him went out into all Syria. They brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.

What Matthew 4:24 Means
The verse begins with the report going out into all Syria, which means word of Jesus’ healing power traveled beyond the villages where he was teaching. People heard, and they came. The phrase “all who were sick” is broad on purpose. Matthew then lists specific conditions, including various diseases, torments, possession by demons, epilepsy, and paralysis, to show that no category of suffering fell outside Jesus’ reach.
The verse ends with the simple statement that he healed them. Read carefully, it describes what happened in that moment in Galilee. It does not, on its own, promise that every believer today will receive physical healing, nor does it set out a formula for getting healed. What it does show is the character of Jesus as one who attends to human suffering and responds to people who bring their needs to him.
The Context of Matthew 4:24
Matthew’s Gospel was most likely written for a community of Jewish Christians, and it is traditionally attributed to Matthew, one of the twelve disciples. Matthew arranges much of his material around teaching and action, and chapters 4 and 5 open the public ministry with Jesus calling his first disciples and then going throughout Galilee. The verses just before this one (Matthew 4:21 to 23) describe Jesus calling James and John, and then summarize his teaching in the synagogues and his healing of every disease among the people.
Read in that setting, verse 24 is a kind of expanded illustration of the summary in verse 23. Matthew is showing the reader what “healing every disease and every sickness” looked like in practice, and why word of it spread so widely. The verses that follow, describing the great crowds from many regions who came to follow him, show the effect of that reputation. Seeing the verse as part of this movement helps the reader understand that the healings were public signs drawing people toward Jesus and his teaching about the kingdom.
Key Phrases in Matthew 4:24
Psalm 147:3

(WEB)
This verse speaks of God healing the brokenhearted and binding up their wounds. It sits alongside Matthew 4:24 by showing the same compassion for suffering people, expressed in the Old Testament before Jesus appeared in Galilee.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest. Read with Matthew 4:24, it shows the same welcome for those who bring their needs, now stated in his own words as an open invitation.
A Short Prayer From Matthew 4:24
Lord Jesus, you were known throughout the region for caring about people who were sick, afflicted, and burdened. Thank you that your compassion has not changed. I bring to you today the things that weigh on me, the worries I have not voiced and the pain I carry in my body and in my heart. Help me to come to you honestly, trusting that you hear me and that you are able to act. Teach me to rest in your care whatever the outcome, and to keep bringing my needs to you each day. Amen.
