1 John 5:10 says that a person who believes in the Son of God carries God’s testimony within them, and a person who refuses to believe God’s testimony about his Son is effectively calling God a liar. The verse was written by the apostle John, traditionally identified as the disciple of Jesus, to Christians in the early church who needed confidence in what they had been taught about Jesus.

He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who doesn’t believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.

What 1 John 5:10 Means

The verse begins with “He who believes in the Son of God.” John is describing faith as a settled trust in who Jesus is, the Son of God, rather than a passing feeling. Because that trust is directed at a real person and a real claim, John says the believer “has the testimony in himself.” The testimony is the message God has given about his Son, and the believer holds it as a conviction that lives inside them, not just as a fact they have heard about.

The second half turns the same idea around. If someone does not believe God’s testimony about Jesus, John says, they have made God out to be a liar. That is a strong statement, but the logic is simple: God has spoken clearly about his Son, so refusing to accept that message means refusing to accept what God has said. The verse does not promise that doubt will never visit a believer, and it does not describe faith as a feeling of certainty on demand. It describes where the testimony rests and what rejecting it implies.

The Context of 1 John 5:10

First John is a letter written to churches facing teachers who were distorting the identity of Jesus and undermining the confidence of ordinary believers. In that setting, John repeatedly points his readers back to the witness about Jesus: the apostolic testimony, the events of his life and death, and the Spirit’s work in the church. Verse 10 sits inside a passage in which John appeals to multiple witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood, to show that God’s testimony about his Son is reliable.

Just after verse 10, John states the content of that testimony: God gave us eternal life, and that life is found in his Son. Read in this light, verse 10 is not a vague call to “have faith” but a reminder that the believer’s confidence rests on a specific message about Jesus that God has already spoken, and that the one who holds it has the life it offers.

Key Phrases in 1 John 5:10

John 20:31

But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

John states here the purpose of his Gospel: that readers would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and find life through that belief. It echoes the theme of 1 John 5:10, showing that trust in the Son of God is the doorway to life.

Romans 10:17

So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Paul explains that faith comes through hearing the message about Christ. This connects with verse 10 by showing where the testimony comes from and how it reaches a person, and why believing God’s word about his Son is central to faith.

A Short Prayer From 1 John 5:10

Father, you have spoken clearly about your Son, and I thank you for that. When my heart feels uncertain, help me return to the testimony you have given rather than trusting only my changing feelings. Let your truth about Jesus settle deep within me, so that I hold it as my own. Where I have doubted what you have said, forgive me, and give me the grace to believe you more fully each day. Help me also to speak of your Son with honesty and love to the people around me. Amen.
