Proverbs 4:6 tells you to hold on to wisdom and not let it go, because wisdom will act as a guard over your life in return. The verse is a father’s instruction to his son, spoken in the book of Proverbs, which is traditionally attributed to Solomon. Its two commands are paired with two promises, and together they describe a relationship with wisdom that protects and sustains.

Don’t forsake her, and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you.

What Proverbs 4:6 Means

The verse is written as a pair of matching sentences. “Don’t forsake her” means do not abandon wisdom or walk away from it when it becomes inconvenient. “She will preserve you” describes what wisdom does in return: it keeps you safe from the many dangers that come from foolish choices. The second pair works the same way. “Love her” asks for affection and loyalty, not merely a passing interest, and “she will keep you” promises that wisdom will watch over the person who truly values it.

The verse does not promise that a wise person will never face trouble. The surrounding chapter is full of the reality that life is hard and that foolish paths lead to ruin. What the verse offers is protection of a deeper kind: a life steered away from the pitfalls that wisdom foresees and that folly walks straight into. It speaks in general terms about how wisdom tends to work, not as a guarantee that every hardship will be avoided.

The Context of Proverbs 4:6

The book of Proverbs is a collection of short sayings and longer instructions aimed at teaching young people how to live well before God. Chapter 4 opens with a father recalling how he was taught, and then passing that teaching on. The verse sits within a speech in which wisdom is repeatedly personified as a woman who is worth pursuing above all else. Verse 5 urges the listener to get wisdom and understanding, and verse 7 declares that wisdom is supreme.

Read in that setting, the verse is not a stray piece of advice about personal habits. It is part of a larger appeal to make wisdom the central pursuit of a life. The father speaks with urgency because the choices of youth shape the decades that follow, and the language of love and embrace shows how personal and committed this pursuit is meant to be.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 4:6

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James invites anyone who lacks wisdom to ask God for it generously. This connects with Proverbs 4:6 by showing that wisdom is not only something we pursue through effort but also something we receive from God when we ask in humility.

Proverbs 3:13-14

13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding. 14 For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold.

(WEB)

These verses describe the blessing of finding wisdom and the value of its profit compared with silver and gold. They reinforce the theme of Proverbs 4:6 by showing why wisdom is worth holding on to with such determination and affection.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 4:6

Lord, you know how easily I drift away from the wisdom you offer. Some days I choose my own way without pausing to ask what is right, and I end up paying for it later. Help me not to forsake wisdom when it feels slow or costly. Teach me to love your ways enough that I return to them again and again. Let your wisdom preserve me from harm I cannot see and keep me close to you in every decision I face today. Amen.
