This prayer is for the moments when fear has taken hold: a diagnosis you were not expecting, a phone call that made your stomach drop, or the quiet dread that wakes you at three in the morning. You can pray it at any hour, sitting up in bed, in the car before you walk into a room, or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee going cold. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own fears in your own words.

Prayer When You Are Afraid

Lord, I am afraid, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. My mind keeps running ahead to the worst things that could happen, and my chest feels tight. I think about the people I love and whether they will be all right, about money I may not have, about the test results, the job, the child who is struggling, the conversation I dread. Some of these fears are about what I cannot control, and that is exactly what frightens me most. I bring every one of them to you now, without tidying them up first.

You already know what I am carrying. You know the names I whisper and the ones I cannot say out loud. You have not been surprised by any of it. Help me to rest in the fact that you are present in this room, in this hour, in whatever comes next. Where I have been trying to hold everything together by force, loosen my grip. Where I have been replaying the same frightening scene again and again, quiet my thoughts and turn my attention toward you. Give me enough courage for the next step, and no more than that, so that I am not crushed by the weight of a future I cannot see.

Be near to me in the fear, and steady me. Remind me that I am not alone and that you have never once let go of the people who call on you. I give you my worry and ask you to receive it. Take what I cannot carry and carry me through it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared right now. You see me in this moment, even if I cannot think clearly. Be close to me and steady my breathing and my heart. Show me the next small step I can take, and help me trust you with the rest. I need you here with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

When fear rises, speak this verse back to God as a decision of trust. Name the fear, then say, in your own words, that you choose to trust him in that moment rather than in your own ability to control the outcome.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each promise land on its own. Pray it as God speaking directly to you, and then answer him with a simple yes, that you believe he is with you in the situation that frightens you.

Psalm 34:4

I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

(WEB)

The psalmist remembers a specific time of fear and a specific act of rescue. Pray this verse by recalling a time God has helped you before, and ask him to meet you in the same faithful way now.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gives this command to Joshua as he faces a daunting task. Pray it over your own situation, asking for courage and asking God to remind you of his presence wherever you go today.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul tells his readers to bring every anxious thought to God in prayer. Use this passage to hand over each specific worry, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind as you do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the fear is most active for you, often early in the morning or late at night, and set aside a few minutes to read the prayer slowly. If you can, sit in a chair with your feet on the floor and let your hands rest open on your lap, or hold something ordinary like a mug, a worn blanket, or a stone you keep in your pocket. Pray out loud if you are able, since hearing your own voice can slow a racing mind.

You do not have to pray this prayer alone. Ask a trusted friend, a spouse, or a member of your church to pray it with you or for you, and tell them the specific fear you are facing. Some people find it helpful to write the prayer on a card and keep it where they will see it, such as on the bathroom mirror or in a wallet. Return to it as often as you need, because fear tends to come back, and each time you pray it you are choosing again to bring it to God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who holds every frightened heart go before you and walk beside you. May his peace settle over your thoughts when they feel loudest, and may you know, even in the dark, that you are seen and kept. Be strong, and let your heart be held.
