These short prayers for Father’s Day are written for anyone who wants to thank God for the father in their life, ask for a blessing on a dad, or pray for a man who is grieving, far away, or hoping to become a father. Pray them on the day itself, at breakfast, in the car, or late in the evening once the cards are signed. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Father’s Day

Father God, thank You for the men who have shaped our lives, whether they lived up to every expectation or fell short in ways that still hurt. Thank You for the dad who taught me to ride a bike, sat up with me through a fever, or simply showed up when it counted. Where he has been faithful, let me see Your hand in it and say thank you clearly. Where he has been absent or wounded, I give that ache to You and ask You to be the steady Father I still need.

Be near to every father today, the one who is proud and the one who is tired, the one holding a newborn and the one sitting alone at a kitchen table. Give him patience for the small moments, courage for the hard conversations, and a sense that his love matters even when he cannot see its effects. Help him know he is seen and that You are not finished with him. Bless the children who love him, the grandfathers, the stepdads, and the men who have stood in the gap for someone else’s kids. Let this day be a gift, not a pressure. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for the father in my life and for the father in Your heart toward me. Bless my dad today, and keep him close to You. Heal what is broken between us, or give me grace where healing is still far off. Strengthen every man who is trying his best to love his family well. Help me honor him in words and actions, not only on this one day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

Pray this for fathers who feel they have failed, and for the children who long to know a father’s compassion. It reminds you that God’s own tenderness is the pattern any earthly dad is reaching toward.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this for the dads who are raising children right now. Ask God to help them lead with patience and encouragement rather than frustration.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this when a father is facing a decision he cannot see past. Ask God to guide his steps and to make the path clear in His time.

Psalm 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

(WEB)

Pray this for children without a father in the home, and for men called to stand in as protectors and providers. It places every fatherless and vulnerable person in the care of God.

Colossians 3:21

Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.

(WEB)

Pray this for dads who tend to correct harshly, asking God to soften their words so their children are encouraged rather than discouraged.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find early morning on Father’s Day the easiest time to pray the longer version. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee, or stand at the window while the house is still asleep. If your own dad is alive, consider holding a photo or something he gave you while you pray, so your hands stay busy and your thoughts stay focused on him.

You can also pray this with others. Read the shorter version aloud over the dinner table before the meal, or ask a family member to pray the blessing over your father during a phone call. If you are far from home or your father has died, pray it at the place where you last spent time together, or simply speak his name to God and let that be enough.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the fathers who read this today and remind them that they are not alone in the work of loving their children. May He give them rest, joy, and fresh courage for tomorrow. And may every son and daughter feel the nearness of a Father who never stops keeping watch over them.
