First John 5:19 tells believers two things: they belong to God, and the wider world is under the control of the evil one. The verse is a statement of confidence and a warning at once. It was written by the apostle John, traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel and the letters that bear his name, to a community of Christians who needed to know where they stood.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

What 1 John 5:19 Means
The phrase “We know” appears throughout this letter. John is not guessing or hoping. He is describing a settled understanding that his readers share. The first claim, “we are of God,” means that those who trust in Jesus belong to God’s family and have been brought into his care. Belonging is not earned by good behavior here. It is a matter of whose they are.
The second claim, “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one,” is a sober picture. John uses “the world” to mean human society organized apart from God, with its values, pressures and rebellion. He says this world is under the sway of the evil one, a term he uses for the devil. The verse does not say evil has total or equal power. It says that the world, left to itself, is held in a grip that only God can break.
What the verse does not promise is a life free from hardship. Believers still face temptation, suffering and opposition. What it promises is that the believer’s identity rests on God, not on the world’s approval or the world’s direction.
The Context of 1 John 5:19
First John is a pastoral letter rather than a formal essay. It was written to encourage Christians facing false teaching and divisions within their communities, and to help them test what they believed against the truth about Jesus Christ. Verse 19 sits near the end of the letter, in a passage about sin, prayer and assurance.
Just before it, John explains that those born of God do not keep on sinning in the settled way the world does, and that God guards them. Just after it, he affirms that the Son of God has come and given us understanding of the true God. Read in this setting, verse 19 is the contrast that makes the assurance meaningful. Believers are distinct from the world because they are God’s, and that identity is secured through Christ.

This verse, just before verse 19, explains that God guards those born of him and that the evil one cannot hold them. Read together, the two verses show that the believer’s safety and the world’s bondage are set side by side, which gives verse 19 its full weight.
John 17:15-16
15 I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

In this prayer, Jesus asks the Father not to take his followers out of the world but to protect them from the evil one. It reflects the same pattern as 1 John 5:19: believers live in the world yet belong to God, and their protection comes from him.
A Short Prayer From 1 John 5:19
Father, you have made me yours, and I thank you for that. When the pressures of this world press hard on me, remind me that my life is held in your hands and not in the grip of anything that opposes you. Help me to live with that confidence, not proudly, but humbly, trusting what you have made true in Christ. Keep my heart from being shaped by what is passing away, and let my choices reflect the one to whom I belong. Amen.
