Romans 4:22 explains that Abraham’s trust in God was counted to him as righteousness, meaning God treated his faith as the thing that put him right with God. Paul wrote this sentence in his letter to the Christians in Rome, using Abraham’s story from Genesis to show that people are made right with God through faith rather than through their own accomplishments.

Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”

What Romans 4:22 Means

The word “therefore” links this verse to the verses just before it, where Paul describes how Abraham kept believing God’s promise of a son even when his body was worn out and Sarah was past childbearing. The verse says that because of that steady trust, the same declaration was made about him. The phrase “credited to him” is a financial picture: a sum is entered into an account. Here the account is righteousness, the state of being acceptable before God.

The verse does not say that Abraham earned God’s approval through a good deed or a difficult sacrifice. It says that God chose to count his faith as the basis of his standing. It also does not promise that a believer will feel strong at all times or that doubts will never come. Abraham is shown wavering in other parts of his story, and Paul’s point is about where his confidence rested, not about a flawless record.

The Context of Romans 4:22

Paul wrote this letter to a mixed congregation in Rome, some of whom were Jewish believers and others Gentiles. Many Jewish readers took pride in being descended from Abraham and in keeping the law, so Paul needed to show that Abraham himself was declared right before he was circumcised or given the law. Romans 4 is therefore a careful argument that righteousness has always come through faith.

The verses that follow in Romans 4:23 to 25 make the application explicit. The same kind of faith is now placed in God who raised Jesus from the dead, who was given up for our sins and raised for our justification. Reading Romans 4:22 with that context shows that the credit given to Abraham is a pattern for everyone who trusts God’s promise through Christ.

Key Phrases in Romans 4:22

Genesis 15:6

He believed in the LORD, who credited it to him for righteousness.

(WEB)

This is the original Old Testament account of Abraham believing God and having it counted to him as righteousness. Reading it alongside Romans 4:22 shows that Paul is drawing directly from Genesis and reinforcing its meaning for his readers.

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, that no one would boast.

(WEB)

Paul here describes salvation as a gift received through faith rather than earned by works. It echoes the same theme found in Romans 4:22 and helps you see how the principle applies to every believer, not only to Abraham.
