Luke 2:36 introduces Anna, an elderly woman who was a prophetess and a regular presence in the Jerusalem temple. Her life of long widowhood and constant worship makes her one of the first people in the Gospel to recognize Jesus as the promised redeemer. Luke tells us this in the middle of the story of Jesus’s dedication at the temple, right after the aged Simeon has spoken over the child.
There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity…

What Luke 2:36 Means
The verse begins by naming a person and giving her family line: Anna, daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. In Scripture, naming a woman with her father and tribe was a way of placing her inside the story of God’s people, so readers know she is not a minor figure. Calling her a prophetess tells us she spoke for God, a role that Luke also gives to Miriam and Deborah in earlier Israelite history.
The middle of the verse describes her age and marriage. She had been married for seven years and then widowed, and by the time of this scene she was very old. Luke does not tell us her age in years here, but the detail stresses a long life of loss and faithfulness. The verse does not promise that faithful people will be rewarded with comfort or ease. It simply shows us a woman whose hardships did not turn her away from God.
The Context of Luke 2:36
Luke wrote his Gospel for a largely Gentile audience, probably in the 80s or 90s of the first century, and he takes care to show how the story of Jesus fulfills the promises to Israel. Chapters 1 and 2 are full of people who waited faithfully for God to act: Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, and Simeon. Anna belongs to that same group of watchful, devout Jews who lived in hope of redemption.
Just before verse 36, Simeon blesses Mary and speaks of a sword that will pierce her soul, and just after, Anna gives thanks to God and speaks of the child to everyone looking for redemption in Jerusalem. Read in that setting, Anna is the second witness to Jesus in the temple, and her place there shows that God’s work is recognized by both a man and a woman, both old, both faithful.
Key Phrases in Luke 2:36
Luke 2:25

This verse introduces Simeon, the man who waited for the consolation of Israel and took the child in his arms. Reading it alongside Anna shows that God gave the first recognition of Jesus to two faithful people who were both living in expectation.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Isaiah speaks of those who wait on the Lord and find their strength renewed. Anna’s long years of worship in the temple reflect this same posture of patient waiting, and the promise connects her life to a larger hope in God’s faithfulness.
A Short Prayer From Luke 2:36
Lord, thank you for the example of Anna, who kept faith in your house through many years of loss and quiet devotion. Help me to wait for you with the same steadiness, even when my hopes feel delayed and my strength feels thin. Open my eyes to see what you are doing in my life today, and give me the courage to speak of your goodness to the people around me. Let my worship be a daily offering to you, whatever seasons I walk through. Amen.
