Exodus 6:22 is a short line in a family list. It names three men, Mishael, Elzaphan and Sithri, as the sons of Uzziel, and it places them in the tribe of Levi. The verse is not a command, a promise or a story in itself, but it helps show how the people of Israel were organized as they were brought toward the promised land. Moses records the line as part of the family records of Levi, the tribe set apart for service connected with the tabernacle.

What Exodus 6:22 Means

The verse opens with “The sons of Uzziel,” which tells you the list is about a family line. Uzziel was a son of Kohath, and Kohath was a son of Levi. So when the text names Uzziel’s sons, it is placing these men within a chain of ancestry that reaches back to Jacob’s son Levi. The phrase tells you that identity and belonging were measured by lineage, and that a person’s place in the community was often defined by which father they came from.

The three names, Mishael, Elzaphan and Sithri, are simply the men recorded as Uzziel’s sons. The verse does not describe their deeds, their faith or their failings. It is closer to an entry in a register than to a sermon. What it does is confirm that these men existed, belonged to the Kohathite branch of the Levites, and were part of the family structure that Moses was recording.

What the verse does not promise is any personal message for you. It does not teach a moral lesson on its own, and it does not give a blessing or warning to the reader. Its value comes from what it shows about the careful, ordered life of God’s people and about the importance Scripture places on keeping every family accounted for.

The Context of Exodus 6:22

Exodus is traditionally attributed to Moses, and the book tells how God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt and began forming them into a covenant people at Sinai. Chapter 6 sits within a section where God reaffirms his promises to Moses and Aaron and renews the call to bring Israel out of Egypt. The genealogy in verses 14 to 25 interrupts the narrative briefly, pausing to record the descendants of Reuben, Simeon and Levi before the account moves on. The original audience was the Israelite community that had lived in slavery and was now being prepared for its national life.

Just before verse 22, Moses reads the list of the sons of Izhar and the sons of Merari, and right after it come Korah’s sons and Eleazar’s marriage. Read in that sequence, Uzziel’s line is one of several Levitical families being set in order. That framing shows why the verse matters: it is part of a deliberate effort to show exactly who belonged to which family, a detail the wilderness community would need when roles around the tabernacle were assigned.

This verse names the sons of Levi, including Kohath, the father of Uzziel. Reading it alongside Exodus 6:22 shows how the Levitical families were organized into clans with defined roles, and it places Uzziel’s line within the larger structure God established for the tribe.

The Chronicles genealogy traces the Kohathite line again, including descendants connected to Uzziel’s family. Reading it with Exodus 6:22 helps you see how these records were preserved across generations and why the Levitical families remained important in Israel’s worship life.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 6:22

Lord, thank you for keeping careful record of your people, even the ones whose names appear only in a list. When I feel my life is small or unnoticed, remind me that you know each person by name and that no one is lost from your sight. Help me to value the people who came before me and the people who sit beside me now. Give me a faithful heart in whatever place you have set me, trusting that you see and remember what I do for you. Amen.
