Proverbs 6:13 describes a person who communicates with hidden signals: winking, gesturing with the feet, and pointing with the fingers. The point is that someone who says one thing with the mouth while signaling another with the body is acting deceptively, and the proverb counts that habit as part of a wicked character. Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of this collection, writes to a young son in the form of a father’s counsel, warning him against joining people whose words and gestures cannot be trusted.

What Proverbs 6:13 Means

The verse lists three kinds of silent signaling. Winking with the eyes suggests a private message shared with a conspirator. Signaling with the feet, probably a nudge or a tap under the table, does the same. Motioning with the fingers points to gestures meant to direct others without speaking openly. Taken together, the picture is of a person who keeps a secret channel of communication running beneath the surface of ordinary conversation.

The proverb is not a general ban on body language. People wink, nod, and point all the time in innocent ways. What the verse targets is the use of such signals to deceive or to coordinate harm, the way a person might tip off an accomplice while appearing friendly to the one being cheated. The surrounding verses make clear that this is a matter of character, not just manners.

The Context of Proverbs 6:13

The book of Proverbs is a collection of short sayings meant to shape the character and judgment of the young, and chapters 1 through 9 are framed as a father speaking to his son. Verse 13 sits within a stretch of warnings about laziness and about a “worthless person” in verses 12 through 15. The verses just before it describe the cost of idleness, and verse 14 names the inner state behind the signals: a heart full of perversity that sows discord.

Read in this setting, the gestures are symptoms rather than the disease. The verse is showing what a corrupt heart looks like when it moves through a crowd, and verse 15 explains the outcome: sudden calamity with no remedy. The proverb is teaching the young to recognize such people early and to avoid being drawn into their schemes.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 6:13

Proverbs 12:22

Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who do the truth are his delight.

(WEB)

This verse says the LORD detests lying lips and delights in people who act faithfully. It pairs naturally with Proverbs 6:13 because both name deception as something God opposes, whether it comes through speech or through silent signals.

Ephesians 4:25

Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to put away falsehood and speak truthfully with one another. The verse gives a New Testament application of the same concern: honesty should mark every part of Christian life, including the unspoken messages we send.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 6:13

Lord, you see the hidden places of my heart and every look and gesture I make when no one is watching. Keep me from sending secret signals that betray the truth or pull others into schemes that hurt them. Where I have been tempted to wink at compromise or nudge someone toward a wrong path, forgive me and turn my heart back toward honesty. Give me clear words and a clean conscience, so that what I say and what I show match your character. Amen.
