John 4:54 simply records that this was the second miraculous sign Jesus performed after coming back from Judea into Galilee. The verse is a short note from the Gospel writer, John, marking a turning point: the first sign was at Cana, and this one is its counterpart, again at Cana, involving a royal official’s son. The verse is John’s own narration, so Jesus is the one being described, not the one speaking.

This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.

What John 4:54 Means

The phrase “this is again the second sign” tells you John is counting. He is not just reporting that something happened; he is organizing his account around a set of signs that point to who Jesus is. Calling it the “second” sign means the reader is meant to compare it with the first one in chapter 2, where Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding in the same village.

“Having come out of Judea into Galilee” places the event geographically. Jesus has just left the south, where he had been in Jerusalem and Judea, and has traveled north to Galilee. Notice what the verse does not say: it does not explain how the healing worked or promise that every sick person will be healed. It simply marks the sign and where it took place.

The Context of John 4:54

The Gospel of John was traditionally attributed to the apostle John, and most readers see it written for a broad church audience, possibly in the late first century. John wrote with a clear purpose, stated near the end of his book, that readers might believe Jesus is the Christ and have life in his name. That purpose explains why he selects a few signs rather than recording everything Jesus did.

The verses just before this one, from John 4:51 to 53, tell the story. A royal official’s son is near death, the father asks Jesus to come, and Jesus tells him his son will live. The father goes home, and his servants meet him with the news that the boy is alive. When the father checks the hour, he realizes it matches the moment Jesus spoke. Verse 54 then closes this episode by labeling it as the second sign. Reading it this way shows that the verse is not a standalone statement but the summary of a whole encounter built on trust in Jesus’ word.

Near the end of his Gospel, John states his purpose for recording the signs. This verse explains why he counts and selects them, helping you see 4:54 as part of a deliberate witness to who Jesus is.

A Short Prayer From John 4:54

Father, you speak, and what you say holds true even when I cannot yet see the outcome. Help me to trust your word the way the official did, taking the first step before I have all the answers. Show me the signs of your presence in my own life, and let each one draw me closer to you. Teach me to wait with hope and to act with faith, knowing that your promises are sure. Amen.
