Proverbs 7:10 describes a young man who meets a woman dressed to draw him in, and whose intentions are deceptive. The verse is a warning: a person who walks carelessly toward temptation can be caught by it, and the setting is presented as a father’s instruction to his son. The speaker is the wise teacher of Proverbs, speaking to a young man, urging him to guard his heart and his steps.

Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent.

What Proverbs 7:10 Means

The verse begins with “Behold,” a word that asks the reader to look closely at the scene. What the young man sees is a woman who has “the attire of a prostitute,” meaning her appearance signals that she offers illicit pleasure. The point is not a lesson on fashion but on how easily a dangerous invitation can be presented as ordinary or attractive.

The phrase “with crafty intent” is the heart of the verse. The woman is not simply available; she is planning. Her approach is calculated to win the young man over before he has time to think. The verse exposes the strategy behind temptation, which usually works by disguising itself rather than announcing its harm.

What the verse does not promise is that temptation will always be obvious. It warns the opposite: the danger often looks like an encounter, a chance, or a welcome surprise. The verse is therefore a call to watchfulness, not a guarantee that the wise will recognize every trap at a glance.

The Context of Proverbs 7:10

Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings, traditionally associated with Solomon and presented as a father’s instruction to a son. Chapter 7 belongs to a longer warning section (chapters 1 through 9) that repeatedly contrasts the path of wisdom with the path of folly, personified in the figures of Lady Wisdom and the seductive woman. The intended audience is a young man who is still forming his character, and the chapter is meant to shape how he thinks about desire and self-control.

The verses just before and after show the sequence that makes the warning vivid. Verses 7 through 9 describe the young man walking near the woman’s corner in the evening, moving toward her house. Verses 11 through 13 describe her restless, bold character and how she catches him with a kiss and an impudent face. Read in that sequence, verse 10 is the moment of first contact in a story of gradual surrender, which is why the chapter treats the approach as the place where resistance matters most.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 7:10

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

(WEB)

This verse urges the reader to guard the heart above all else, because life flows from it. It pairs naturally with Proverbs 7:10 by showing that the defense against crafty temptation begins inside, in the kind of attention and loyalty a person chooses to protect.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers that temptation is common to people and that God provides a way of escape. It complements Proverbs 7:10 by offering hope: the warning about cunning is real, but it is not a sentence of helplessness, and God is faithful in giving a way through.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 7:10

Lord, you see the places where I am tempted to walk closer than I should. Give me eyes to notice when something is being offered to pull me away from you, and a heart that is quick to turn toward what is good. Where I have been careless, forgive me, and where I am tired of resisting alone, strengthen me with your Spirit. Keep my steps steady and my loyalties clear, so that I am not caught off guard by what looks harmless. Amen.
