Luke 4:31 tells us that Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and began teaching the people there on the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest and worship. The verse is a short transition in Luke’s Gospel, marking where Jesus went after being rejected in his hometown synagogue. It is spoken by Luke, the narrator, and describes Jesus’s movements and his teaching among the people of Capernaum.

What Luke 4:31 Means

The verse begins with Jesus coming down to Capernaum. Capernaum sat on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and the phrase “came down” reflects the lower elevation of the lake region compared with the hills around Nazareth. Luke is simply telling us where Jesus is now, and that he has moved from a hostile crowd to a new town willing to listen.

The second part says he was teaching them on the Sabbath. Luke does not record the content of that teaching here. Instead, he sets up the scene that follows, where the listeners are astonished at the authority with which Jesus speaks. The verse does not promise any particular outcome for the people who hear him, but it shows Jesus faithfully doing the work of teaching on a holy day.

The Context of Luke 4:31

Luke wrote this Gospel to a Gentile reader named Theophilus, and tradition holds that Luke was a companion of Paul. The early chapters of the book present Jesus as the Spirit-anointed Messiah who comes to bring good news to the poor and to people who have been overlooked. Right before this verse, Jesus has been driven out of Nazareth after reading from Isaiah and claiming that Scripture is fulfilled in him, and the crowd nearly killed him.

Seeing that background changes the way the verse reads. Luke 4:31 is not just a travel note. It shows that rejection in one place does not stop Jesus from teaching elsewhere. The move to Capernaum sets up the healings and exorcisms that come right after, including the man with an unclean spirit in verses 33 and following.

Key Phrases in Luke 4:31

Mark 1:21-22

21 They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught. 22 They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.

Mark records a parallel scene in Capernaum where Jesus teaches in the synagogue and the people are amazed at his authority. Reading it alongside Luke 4:31 shows how the Gospel writers agree on this moment and highlight the same striking teaching.

Isaiah 61:1

The Lord the LORD’s Spirit is on me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound…

This passage from Isaiah is the text Jesus reads in Nazareth just before the events of Luke 4:31. It explains the mission he carries into every town, including Capernaum, to proclaim good news to people who need it most.

A Short Prayer From Luke 4:31

Lord Jesus, you went from town to town, teaching people who were ready to listen and moving on when others turned away. Help me to trust you when a door closes, knowing that you still have good work for me to do somewhere else. Give me a heart that treasures your word and makes room for it, especially on the days set aside to rest and worship you. Teach me to listen for your voice in the ordinary places where you have placed me. Amen.
