John 5:38 says that the Jewish leaders did not have God’s word dwelling in them, and the reason is that they did not believe the one God had sent. In other words, knowing the Scriptures is not the same as trusting the Person they point to. Jesus spoke these words to a group of religious leaders in Jerusalem during a dispute over his healing of a man on the Sabbath.

You don’t have his word living in you; because you don’t believe him whom he sent.

What John 5:38 Means

The phrase “God’s word living in you” describes more than memorizing or recognizing sacred text. A word that lives in a person shapes how they think, what they love, and how they act. Jesus is saying that the leaders had the written words in their hands but the words had not taken root in their hearts.

The cause, according to the verse, is unbelief in the one whom God sent. The word of God is not a set of instructions detached from the Son. When the leaders refused to believe Jesus, they cut themselves off from the very word they claimed to honor. The verse does not say they could never change, but it places the problem in their refusal to trust.

What the verse does not promise is that simply reading the Bible guarantees spiritual life. Jesus draws a sharp line between reverent study and genuine faith. It is possible to know a text thoroughly and still miss the One it describes.

The Context of John 5:38

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in him brings life. The audience is likely a mixed readership of Jewish and Gentile Christians, and the author records a long debate between Jesus and the religious authorities in Jerusalem that began after the healing at the pool of Bethesda.

Just before verse 38, Jesus points to four witnesses: John the Baptist, his own works, the Father, and the Scriptures. The verses after it add that the leaders search the Scriptures, yet refuse to come to Jesus for life. Read in this setting, verse 38 is the hinge of the argument. The leaders have the testimony, but they lack the heart to receive the one it testifies about.

Key Phrases in John 5:38

John 20:31

But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

This verse states the purpose of John’s Gospel: that readers would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in his name. It shows that the written word is meant to bring people to faith in the person it describes, which is exactly the connection verse 38 draws.

Luke 24:44-45

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures.

After his resurrection, Jesus opens the minds of his disciples to understand the Scriptures. The passage shows that real understanding of the sacred writings comes when Jesus himself is recognized as their center, which deepens the point made in verse 38.

A Short Prayer From John 5:38

Lord Jesus, you know how easily I can read your word without letting it reach my heart. Forgive me for the times I have treated Scripture as information instead of a living message from you. Open my eyes to see you clearly as the one the Father sent. Help me to trust you, not only to know about you, so that your word would settle deep in me and shape my choices today. Amen.
