Proverbs 8:7 says that wisdom speaks what is true and turns away from wickedness, and that both of these are as natural to her as breathing. The verse is spoken by Wisdom herself, personified as a woman who calls out in the streets and gates of the city. She is addressing ordinary people, and especially the simple and the foolish, inviting them to listen before it is too late.

For my mouth speaks truth. Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

What Proverbs 8:7 Means

The verse begins with a claim about speech: “my mouth speaks truth.” Wisdom’s words are not hollow or deceptive. What she says lines up with reality, so a person can rely on it when making decisions about work, money, family, and faith. Truth in Proverbs is not only a matter of accurate facts but of words that build a life on solid ground.

The second half moves from speech to character. Wickedness is called an “abomination” to her lips, a strong word meaning something deeply repugnant. Wisdom does not merely avoid evil as a rule to be followed; she finds it intolerable, the way a person recoils from spoiled food. The verse does not promise that wise people will never face temptation or be tempted to shade the truth. It describes the direction of a life shaped by wisdom and the revulsion that grows toward what damages others.

The Context of Proverbs 8:7

The book of Proverbs is a collection of sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, with later sections added by other wise men and compilers. Chapters 1 through 9 form an introduction that urges a young person to pursue wisdom over the seductions of violence, greed, and sexual immorality. Chapter 8 is one of its most striking passages, because wisdom speaks in her own voice and is presented as present with God at creation.

Read within verses 4 through 10, Proverbs 8:7 is part of a sustained appeal. Wisdom calls out to all people, then describes her words as excellent, upright, and plain to anyone who wants to understand. Verse 8 adds that nothing crooked or perverse is found in her words. Seen this way, verse 7 is not a boast but an invitation: you can trust what she says because her speech has been shaped by righteousness throughout.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 8:7

Ephesians 4:15

But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ…

Paul pairs speaking the truth with love, showing that honesty in the New Testament is meant to build up the body of Christ. It deepens the Proverbs picture by describing truth as something spoken in a way that helps others grow.

Proverbs 8:8

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

The verse immediately following continues Wisdom’s claim that all her words are righteous and free of anything crooked. Reading it alongside verse 7 shows how completely her speech is meant to be trusted.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 8:7

Lord, you are the God of truth, and you call me to speak what is real and reject what harms. Search my heart where my words begin, and make my mouth a place where honesty and kindness meet. When I am tempted to shade the truth or speak carelessly about others, give me the wisdom to recoil from that path and choose a better word. Shape my speech so that it reflects your character in ordinary conversations. Amen.
