Joshua 10:8 is God speaking directly to Joshua, telling him not to be afraid of the coalition of Amorite kings. The Lord promises that He has already handed these enemies over to Israel, and that none of them will be able to stand against Joshua’s army. The words come at a moment of real danger, just before a surprise attack on the city of Gibeon’s attackers.

The LORD said to Joshua, “Don’t fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you.”

What Joshua 10:8 Means

The verse opens with a command: “Don’t fear them.” God does not pretend the enemy is weak or that the battle will be easy. He names the fear and tells Joshua to set it aside, which is a different thing from denying that danger exists.

The reason given is “for I have delivered them into your hands.” The phrase describes the outcome as already settled by God’s decision, so Joshua is not being asked to win the battle by his own strength alone. The promise that “not a man of them will stand before you” is a statement about the result of this particular campaign, not a general guarantee that believers will always win every conflict they face.

The Context of Joshua 10:8

The book of Joshua tells the story of Israel entering and taking the land God had promised to their ancestors. Traditionally, Joshua himself is considered the main figure behind the book, though it was likely compiled and edited later. Its first audience would have been the Israelite people, who needed to remember how God had led them into the land and why they could trust Him for what came next.

Verses 5 through 7 show the five Amorite kings gathering against Gibeon, which had made peace with Israel. The Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help, and he marched all night to reach them. Seen in that setting, God’s words in verse 8 are an encouragement to act with courage, and they explain why Joshua could move quickly and confidently toward the battle.

Key Phrases in Joshua 10:8

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

This verse was spoken as Moses handed leadership to Joshua, urging strength and courage because the Lord goes with His people. It sets the same theme of courage rooted in God’s presence that appears in Joshua 10:8, showing that the call to be fearless comes from a relationship rather than from self-confidence.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David wrote this psalm in a time of danger and expresses trust in God as the response to fear. Like Joshua 10:8, it places fear and faith side by side and shows that choosing to trust is a practical act that can shape how a person faces threats.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 10:8

Lord, you know the fears that sit heavily on my heart today. I bring them to you instead of carrying them alone. Help me to remember that you are faithful and that you have already gone ahead of me into every situation I face. Give me the courage to take the next faithful step, even when I cannot see the whole path. Teach me to rest in your promises and to trust your timing and your care. Amen.
