Hebrews 11:22 says that Joseph, near the end of his life, trusted God so firmly that he spoke about the future departure of Israel from Egypt and gave instructions about where his bones should be taken. The verse is part of the author of Hebrews’ list of people whose faith shaped what they did, and it describes an act of faith that looked far beyond Joseph’s own death. The writer is speaking to Jewish Christians who needed to see that the faith of their ancestors was still the faith they were called to live by.

By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.

What Hebrews 11:22 Means

The phrase “by faith” tells you that this is not a story about Joseph’s achievements in Egypt or his years as a governor. It is about how he looked at the future. Joseph was a man who had been sold by his brothers, imprisoned, and then raised to power, and yet at the end of his life he was not focused on his own comfort or legacy. He was focused on a promise that had not yet been fulfilled.

When Joseph “made mention of the departure of the children of Israel,” he was pointing forward to a day he himself would never see. He was confident that God would bring his family out of Egypt and back to the land God had promised. The instruction about his bones was a practical sign of that confidence. He wanted to be carried out of Egypt with the people when they left, rather than remaining there. Genesis records that his request was honored, and Exodus 13:19 shows his bones being carried out.

The verse does not promise that every believer’s plans will be fulfilled in their lifetime, nor does it give a formula for guaranteed outcomes. What it shows is a settled trust in God’s faithfulness that carries past the end of one’s own life. Joseph did not need to see the outcome to act on his belief in it.

The Context of Hebrews 11:22

The letter to the Hebrews is anonymous, though the early church often connected it with Paul, and most modern readers treat its author as an unknown teacher writing to a community of Jewish Christians who were under pressure and tempted to drift back toward old patterns. Chapter 11 is a catalog of faithful people from the Hebrew Scriptures, and it opens by defining faith as confident assurance about things hoped for. The author is showing that faith has always looked like this across the story of Israel.

Verses 19 through 25 move through a sequence of believers: Abraham’s willingness to trust God even with Isaac, Isaac and Jacob blessing their sons with a view to what was coming, and then Joseph in verse 22, followed by Moses’ parents and Moses himself. Seeing Joseph between Jacob and Moses helps the reader understand that his faith was part of a line of trust that prepared the way for the exodus. That context makes the verse feel less like an isolated remark about bones and more like a link in a chain that the original readers would have recognized.

Key Phrases in Hebrews 11:22

Genesis 50:24

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

(WEB)

This verse records Joseph’s own words to his brothers that God would surely visit them and bring them out of Egypt, and his request that his bones be carried up with them. It is the original statement that Hebrews 11:22 is reflecting on, and reading the two together shows how long Joseph carried this hope.

Exodus 13:19

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.”

(WEB)

Here Moses records that the Israelites took Joseph’s bones with them when they left Egypt, as Joseph had made them swear. This verse shows the promise being carried out and helps explain why the author of Hebrews would point to Joseph’s words as an example of faith.

A Short Prayer From Hebrews 11:22

Lord, you are faithful to every promise you have made, even when the fulfillment is still far off. Help me to live today with the kind of confidence Joseph showed at the end of his life. Give me eyes to see your purposes in the people and places around me, and a heart willing to act on what you have said. Where I am tempted to measure my faith only by what I can see, remind me that you are working across generations. Teach me to speak of your goodness to those who come after me, so that they too can trust you. Amen.
